A woman who works in my office woke up this morning to discover that her car had been stolen from her driveway (not in Maplewood or South Orange). She had left personal financial statements and a client file in the car. She had to close all bank/credit card accounts today and is now worried about identity theft. She also has to recreate the client file. So, think twice before leaving anything of importance in your car. This happened in a "good" community. |

A few weeks ago i was at a friends house and she gets a call from the Maplewood police department asking her if her husband drives a BMW she replied yes then the officer asked if her husband was in maplewood at that time and she said no(he ran the license plate because the driver looked suspicious)So now the police officer is driving behind the veichle which was stolen and tells her to call the Roseland Police Department and file a report of a stolen veichle. He said he could not do anything because there was no report filed. Iam sure he could of pulled the car over for something |

For years Maplewood and South Orange has been the "Oasis" of Green trees, nice homes and cars in Essex County. I was in my driveway one night and witnesed my friends car being broken into and went to lump the bastard up and wound up getting hit with the car! Just another day.

I used to keep the registration in my wallet, right behind my license. Maybe I should go back to doing that. The NJ DMV will, for $5 each, issue a "family duplicate" registration card so you and your spouse can each have a registration card for each car. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Ever since my car had the theft attempt last year, I put it in the garage, lock it and take in my briefcase, etc. |

...take the keys, take the registration, take your valuables, but most important, take responsibility! Take it from someone who has made a living for over forty years taking cars. Protect your vehicle with a cut off switch, wheel and brake lock, and alarms. You will not only help protect your vehicle, but you could save a life. An ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure... |

Why is taking the registration out of the car important? It's not proof of ownership, the title is, right? Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

from what i understand it isn't too hard to get a duplicate title with the registration. |

What do you care about? This issue is not about the registration or the title, neither will stop your vehicle from being taken...

But your registration has your name, address, DL number(which has identifiers in the number itself), which all can be used against you in identity theft. officerfriendly |

OK, lets try one more time... Take everything of value out of the car and lock it up... Take the keys, take the registration, take your valuables, and take responsibility for protecting your car. That's it!

Officerfriendly - what should one do if a car is stolen with registration to avoid identity theft? |
