hey rick- why haven't you explained why it's okay in your mind to have the cell phone tower by the country club, but not the bed and breakfast? anyone driving up elmwood ave can see arts property is different then the other houses in the area. even i noticed it as a kid in the early 70's. is it okay for the cell tower because it benefits you? but not okay for the bed and breakfast because none of your out of town friends need to stay there? why won't you talk to art face to face instead of hiding behind your computer screen? |

Thank you Art for taking the time out of your schedule to meet with us and discuss the issues at hand. It should always be the case that neighbors speak to each other face to face, especially when there are contentious issues... We look forward to having an open line of communication with you and a peaceful co-existence. |

softparade et al Yes I am a friend of Art. I support him when he is right and criticize him when he is wrong. I stand behind each of my 12 points and do so using my real name. Since you post under an alias, I don't know what prejudices you bring to your post or what ax you may have to grind. Different people can look at the same town data and make different analyses of it. The bottom line is that Les Saisons has agreed to accept the very restrictive settlement which the powers that be put on the table. The only fair thing is for the board to accept Les Saison's acceptance, so we can all move on! Ed May |

Marilyn, Their power is all that is necessary to resove this issue for the township at this time. Their names don't matter at this point, but will be made known to the public at the hearing, as well as how each one votes. As Ed said, and I agree, it's really time to move on to more important things.... Listen, I woke up this morning, and like most days, I wondered how I was going to do everything I wanted to. Of course, like most MOL junkies, I checked the message board on the way to the bathroom, grabbed my “To do List”, turn on the grill for my pancakes, and then suddenly I realized it’s Leap Year… WOW!! I have an extra day, how great is that? Well, with everything that needs to get done, I’m sure I’m not the only one who can use the extra day. I decided that to take advantage of this windfall, I would need to prioritize things in order of what was most important based on the time left to get it done. Looking at this thread, I decided that everything that needed to be said has already been said. We’ve heard from those in favor and those against the bed and breakfast, so maybe it’s time to move on. Of course it would be great if some of you can show up at town hall tomorrow night, but either way, I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to this issue, and I want everyone to know I sincerely appreciate all the positive support I’ve received. Thank you, thank you, and thank you... So what’s next? Well, keeping with local issues, for me it’s the new police station discussion tomorrow night.… Lets see, Monday night sure looks busy. First there’s my son’s 36th birthday, dinner with friends at 6PM, the Men’s Glee Club at 7PM, the Township Committee Search Group meeting at 7:30, and the Board of Adjustment hearing at 8PM, and then the “Sink or Swim Party” at the Pub afterward... Listen, with all I want to do, I sure could use some help with the search group meeting. If any of you reading this post are interested in where the town decides to build our new police headquarters, I invite you to check out the thread named, “New police station?”... An ever growing group of us in town are in agreement that the township committee needs to consider the pool parking lot and Maplewood Rescue Building as a possibility that should be looked at along with the other four now on the short list. I strongly advocate this innovative suggestion for the new police department as the one that would best serve our community at large. Therefore, I want to reach out to everyone who is involved with the previously proposed playground plan for the community pool, the Skate Park Committee, members of the Rescue Squad, the Maplewood Gardens Townhouse Board, the Winchester Gardens Board, the Maplewood Police and Fire Departments, the Swimming Pool Advisory Board, the Transportation Committee, the Springfield Avenue Partnership, the Planning Board, the Economic Development Committee, the Recreation Department, the Design, Review, and Beautification Committee, and the Environmental, Historic, and Neighborhood Preservation Committee’s. I seriously have not been able to find a down side of using the pool site, meanwhile, the positive aspects keep growing by the minute. For this reason, representatives of each of these groups I listed would best serve the community if they were present at Monday night’s meeting at the Burgdorff Center. Please reach out today to see who you can get to attend the meeting. I’m going to re-post this thread on the New police station? thread, with a list of all the positive and negative criteria we can think of. Thanks. Art

Sorry Anon, if it's on Monday night, I already have too much on my plate to try and work that in... However, my first thought is, I doubt anyone will really take that proposal seriously.

ART: They are taking it seriously! The Superintendent claims there is just no money for any after school sports! I know you have too much on your plate, but you are a CHS graduate. |

Anon: Doing away with all afterschool activities or doing way with the funding for them? These could be viewed as two different issues. As public education grows more and more expensive, an increasing number of school districts are looking towards having after school activities funded solely by the families of the students who participate in them.

Anon, I don't know anything about this.... What kind of after school sports, and how much money are we talking about? Even more important, what do you think we can do about it? BTW, Joan may have something there about after school activities being funded solely by the families of the students who participate in them... Listen, I'm always interested in listening to other suggestions.

I have only second hand information about the BOE budget problem and the folks I got my info from got theirs from the News-Record! But it appears that there may not be enough money for after school sports at CHS. So it is a question of doing away with funding, but the question then becomes whether those activities can be self-funded. The feelings of the parents I heard discussing this is that the BOE has too many chiefs, that is too many assistant superintendents and assistant principals and that one of their salaries could fund the whole sports program at its current level. BUT the reason for my initial post was just to point out what a busy night tomorrow night is! |

Yes it is, and thank you Anon... Lets see what comes of the meeting and we'll decide what to do about it then. Jamie, that's the coolest thing I've ever seen on MOL. If and when I ever grow up, I want to be just like you... |

I found Jamie's submission VERY FUNNY! Especially the one about Art. But "Best Stand-Up Comedian" goes to Jamie? I think Jamie and I need a local venue for a stand-up comedy face off, and let the assembled throng decide who is funnier! Signed Ed May, Class of 1976 Ed May |

BACK TO BASICS: The Maplewood Board of Adjustment will decide the fate of Les Saisons as a Bed and Breakfast at their public meeting TONIGHT which is Monday evening, March 1, 2004, 8 PM, at Maplewood Town Hall. If the Board votes "YES", then the settlement that the Board itself created last fall - which Les Saisons has accepted - will end the continuing litigation against Les Saisons Bed and Breakfast. The Settlement will allow Art and Libby Christensen to continue operating their B&B, albeit under very strict guidelines. These guidelines address the concerns of the Township of Maplewood, and the interests of the neighborhood surrounding Les Saisons Bed and Breakfast. Please voice your support for having this Bed and Breakfast in our community, by attending the Board of Adjustment Meeting TONIGHT! (If you cannot get there exactly at 8 PM, no problem, since these meetings often start late, and there could be other business addressed before LES SAISONS.) (If you get to the meeting too late, have no fear, for we shall be over at the Pub!) Ed May |

Tonight the Maplewood Board of Adjustment voted unanimously to turn down the settlement agreement between the Township of Maplewood and the bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, the Board wouldn’t even agree to modify the settlement to address any objections raised by the neighbors attorney and others who spoke against it. In the wisdom of the majority of those opposing, the only place they feel a bed and breakfast belongs is on Springfield Avenue, not in a residential neighborhood. I believe most people should be aware that 99% of all bed and breakfasts are large older one family homes, which of course are only located in what else, but one family neighborhoods. Personally, not having anything against Springfield Avenue, I don’t know of any old Victorian there, and honestly can’t imagine there are many people who would be willing to stay in one if there was... We came tonight with the idea that the meeting was meant to be a Fairness Hearing. My adversaries turned out in force, and included a strong letter opposing the settlement by former Mayor Jerry Ryan who was out of town, and a personal impassioned presentation against the settlement by former Mayor Vic DeLuca. The truth is that any idea we had of settling this matter with my neighbors and those who sided with them is now out of the question. I do believe the Board entered this meeting with the best intentions, however, it is now clearly evident that the only solution to resolve this matter is through the courts. Therefore, I have directed my attorney to bring this matter back to the Appellate Court where the litigation will continue. Of course this means considerable more time and money will be spent by all concerned. To say I’m disappointed would be a huge understatement. And, even though the number of supporters who attended was disappointingly low, I want to extend my sincere appreciation for those who came, and those who expressed their support on line. Thank you, one and all, Art Christensen. |
