My husband's 17 year-old brother (and a friend) are coming to stay with us for their 'Spring Break'. They are from St. Louis and are being sent here to develop some independence before going away to college. Now, I know they will be tripping into the city to do all the things that 17 year-old boys do... but are there any options closer to Maplewood-South Orange? What do your teenagers do around here?????? I'm out of touch.... |

If they are sports fans get Devil's and or Net's tickets. Check out special events that the Meadowlands or the Garden such as concerts. |

Seventeen-year-olds don't hang out in Maplewood Center. That's for younger kids (maybe up to 14 or so?) |

Well JG - as you can see, there is not much for teens in these towns. But.. there's always the movies and, depending on their taste in music, The Dancing Goat in S. Orange or if they go a little further, the Eclectic Cafe in Montclair. You might also check and see what SHU is offereing during their stay - baseball or soccer contests are likely, possibly a play or concert. |

Hmmm - I guess the choices for teenage entertainment haven't improved since I was there. It's such a tough age and there never seem to be options for them. And of course, then we wonder why the end up 'experimenting'???? These two are really great kids - I was just looking to offer them some 'hip' choices. Sports seem like a good option! |

Does this area have any music clubs -- or nights -- for those under 21? Area concerts? |

Let them hang out in Washington Square Park and the east village on a warm afternoon. There will be lots of NYU students around & give them a flavor. Don't worry; I'm sure they'll be fine! |

The intent of this trip is for the two of them to hang out and find their way around the city alone. They are off to college in Chicago in the Fall. My young brother-in-law is the youngest of 5 and has been a bit more coddled than his brothers. I'm going to point them towards Arlene's Grocery down in L.E.S. for a music venue and give them list of independent music stores to visit. They both play guitar - and well, are fanatics. I just began to wonder what was available locally - you know, so they didn't have to take the train every night. But I guess that's what movie night is for
