Cross posting this from Soapbox so that SO residents see it too.

Mayor Fred Profeta and SO Village President Bill Calabrese will be speaking at the Newcomers Club meeting tonight. This a great chance to meet each of them, hear what they have to say about our two towns, and ask questions in an informal setting.

We start gathering around 7:45 P.M. Meetings are at Morrow Methodist Church on Ridgewood Rd. in Maplewood. We are meeting in McDonald Hall, the basement room next to the parking lot. Look for the pineapple.

Hope to see you there!

-David Wren-Hardin
-President, Newcomers Club of South Orange and Maplewood

Maybe someone could ask both of them if they would start officiating at samesex marriages in the 2 towns? If any community ought to do that, it's South Orange and Maplewood~!

Calabrese is a Republican - I'm sure he'd never let it happen.

Interesting meeting. Mayor Profetta spoke quite a bit about the location of the new police station. Says he expects to make a decision this month based on the citizen advisory committee's recommedation and consultant's recommedation. He seemed to imply that a location on Springfield Ave. may be very desirable. Construction of the shell should be complete by next winter so that work can continue on the interior through the cold months. Profetta also spoke about the school board and how it works.

President Calabrese spoke about the progress of the market, apartments, and SOPAC. He expressed frustration at how slowly government moves, pointing out the many checkpoints that require county or state approval. The village, he said, has four or five companies interested in the market space. Construction on SOPAC will begin in June or July. He also tried to explain the complex nature of tax abatements and how they will someday affect our property taxes.

"four or five companies interested in the market space"

Hmmm....all along we've been told that the space is too small & it's a challenge to find someone willing to work with such a small space.

Gee...you would think with such high demand, it wouldn't take 3 years (& counting) to get this project underway.

I sense there was a little over-optimism coming from Mr. Calabrese. I know that's hard to believe.

MHD: First off, it is a developer that puts up the money, not the supermarket operator. Second, there are several steps a developer has to go through before he can start building. Third, it will be three years this May since the developer was announced.
Yes a developer will not have any trouble finding a market operator. The trick is/was finding the developer.

Bill Calabrese is an optimist.

I give up trying to remember the status of all these projects. Wasn't there an approval for a developer to do this project already? Did that developer drop out?

The developer is still in. He received his approval from the S. Orange planning board last May. He still needs one more apporoval from the county and the developer's agreement needs to finalized.
