Since Tomo left SO and we've had not-great experiences anywhere else, we've just about given up.

Mr. H refuses to return to Samurai, Dee. He disliked it immensely the last time we were in. |

Samurai is ok, but I was spoiled by Tomo, too. Fortunately I think I absorbed a tiny bit of his wisdom and now roll my own. |

Try Ajian. 1525 US Highway 22 Watchung, NJ Phone: (908) 226-1212 Go down springfield/meisel to Rte 22 and head West for 10-15 minutes. It's on the right just after a Mobil station. Not where you'd expect to find good sushi. It's not the atmosphere of Tomos, but the best sushi we've been able to find since he left. Someone on here recommended it to us initially and we've been there a whole bunch of times - always excellent!

Just had lunch at Zen in the Pathmark shopping center plaza at the Rt. 10 circle. Very good & fresh. Generous portions. |

From this thread and others, we decided to stay close to home and went to Haru on Academy St. It was average at best. Next time, we'll try one of the places in Millburn or Summit. Thanks |

If you want to venture over to Montclair, Nouveau Sushi is excellent. The chef used to be a chef at Nobu in NYC. |

I've been to Nouveau Sushi ...It was excellent! Pricey, but great. The service was great, the presentation was a work of art. It wasn't until afterward I found out the chef was formerly of Nobu, and I realized why it was so expensive, even for Montclair. |

I actually prefer Waterlillies if you're looking for something local and not too expensive. Bricks (Brix?) in Summit is really good if you want to spend a little more. They have a good selection of unique rolls. |

My one experience with Waterlilies Sushi, I generally shy away from Chinese restaraunt Sushi, was disgusting. Never tire Brix but Monster Sushi in Summit is good. |

I try to stay away from Korean or Chinese owned Sushi restaurants as most of their chef's do not have anywhere near the training a good Japanese sushi chef has and with raw fish you have to be careful. I will eat rolls however since for these you don't have to be as skilled (I hope). Interestingly enough , there is one kind of sashimi that I have never had at a Japanese restaurant and only at Chinese restaurants, Lobster sashimi. I have only had this in San Francisco and Shanghai (it was ordered by Chinese friends of mine, don't believe it was on the menu). If you ever get to try this, go for it, delicious. Has anyone had this in a Japanese Sushi/sashimi restaurant around here?. |

Depending on how it's served, lobster sashimi is often still alive while you're consuming it. Heisenberg may have slept here

In terms of freshness, when you eat sushi might be as important as where...my husband just read these restaurant books by a chef who says restaurants mostly order fresh seafood toward the end of the week for the weekend - so by the time Monday rolls around, it's old - yuck! |

"Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Boursain (sp?) was the clincher for me: I no longer eat sushi on sundays or mondays. Nope. Not even Nobu... OK ...maybe Nobu. But only if I'm not paying. |

JK - yes. We tried it twice when it was new about a year ago and was unimpressed. Similar in not very good quality to Haru. but maybe things have improved. |

We get sushi from Haru on Academy and I think they're great. There's another sushi joint on SO Ave. where Tomo used to be, but haven't tried that yet. Would love feedback from others that have. Thanks! |
