I am thinking of getting a DSL service through one of our phone lines. We don't have cable or satelite TV and don't intend to in the near future. Is Verizon DSL service OK in the area ? |

Hi, I set up a lot of home-networking for people in the area, and many of them have Verizon DSL as their link to the Internet. I have generally been satisfied from what I have seen out of Verizon. Their tech support seems to be top-notch. Marc www.millburnweb.com |

I agree with magmasystems. We've had Verizon's DSL for about 6 months now and it's been great. |

I've had DSL with Verizon for 3 years, in both Brooklyn and Maplewood, and have never had a problem. |

Verizon DSL is great. If pick another provider they are reselling Verizon or just leasing the line from the central office to your house cause they are not going to run a line (the last mile) to your house. This situtation sometimes becomes a problem when you have a service issues, finger pointing between the provider and Verizon. I say go with VZ, they offer bundle packages that give discounts when you add new services to existing accounts and single bill/invoice. |

I second Speakeasy. I was originally going to go with Verizon and they said that there were problems with the wires that were going to my place and they could not provide any type of DSL service. I then called Speakeasy and they said no problem. Verizon actually had to come out to do their part of provisioning the Speakeasy circuit.

We got ours through the MCI "Neighborhood" program where we pay a single flat rate of $85 a month for unlimited everything (local, toll, LD, DSL). After taxes and surcharges that get stacked on top of any telecom transaction, you're paying about $100 a month out of pocket. I have been quite surprised to call tech support twice and gotten right through to someone who was actually a technician, who actually could talk turkey with me about diagnosing network / DHCP issues and even helped me with my home network routing when it's clearly out of the scope of what they would be responsible for. We are now completely and quite happily Verizon-free...

What upload speeds do Verizon, MCI, Speakeasy offer in this area? I've preferred cable because they don't distinguish upload and download speeds, but I'm tired of Comcast bumping up their prices every month. I've already dumped the TV and am almost ready to bail on cable broadband. |

My Verizon DSL delivers about 600 mb down/100 mb up speeds (actual). |

Check the Speakeasy website. (http://www.speakeasy.net/) They have different plans with different speed (and other) options. Recently they increased (doubled, I think) the speed on my plan with no price increase. |

Depending on how frar from CO you are, Speakeasy speeds are from 1.5 to 3mb download and 256 to 768 uploads. |

Thanks for the info. I suspect most people are Web browsing so most traffic is downlink. Let's put it this way: any experience with video-conferencing e.g. via Netmeeting over DSL?

I have done a few meeting over DSL and have not had and issue, although I couldn’t do it over a wireless network. |

Speakeasy. Verizon's customer service is awful. |
