Sorry to ask this question again as I know it comes up a lot but you never know, there could be new info so here goes: Looking for a recommendation for an exterior carpenter and painter.

We want to remove aluminum siding and have the wood painted. We know there is clapboard underneath but don't know of it's condition on every part of the house, hence the need for a carpenter.

Also looking for exterior painting companies. Got an estimate from Rutgers last fall for $8000 which seems really high for my very moderately sized 3bdrm house. Thanks.

The only thing I can say in defense of rutgers is I've not heard of anyone who wasn't pleased with the end result and they are the experts in prep....they'll sand your whole house if need be.

I know I used someone who cost less .. but beyond it being the right color ... I'm not as happy as most of the folx I know who used rutgers.

Rutgers does do a nice job. We worked on many of the houses they were to paint and never heard a peep.
You may need to act soon on the repair to the house if you wish to have it painted by fall.
The cost of cedar clap can be expensive. Is it 5/4, 1 by, decorative ship lap?
Goof luck

Are we the only people not happy with Rutgers Painting? We had our house painted in June of 1999 and even after having some patch repairs done each of the following two summers, our house has major areas of peeling paint almost everywhere you look, especially one side and all the trim. Did we have our house sanded down to bare wood? No, not entirely, but Kevin didn't recommend it. I expect the painter to make the right recommendation for my house, especially when I expressed an interest in having a paint job last at least 7-8 years. And it's not like we didn't pay. This was 5 years ago and we paid over $6000.

When I called Kevin last spring, which was 4 years after the paint job, to show him what was happening, he said that it was due to the underlying lead paint starting to peel away from the house, and that they've found that they do have to sand down to bare wood. He said he'd now have to charge me for repairs due to the passing of the warranty period.

Not only that, but I wasn't happy with them while they were doing the work. On some days, an army of non-English speaking guys descended on our house like flies, with what felt like little or no oversight. When they removed our storm windows, they simply plopped them inside the house, in one case leaning a filthy window against our pale yellow bedding on our bed. In what was soon to be our baby room, they removed a broken glass window panel by simply punching it into the room. On another day, I came down to the basement to discover a huge flood, complete with soaked rugs, after one of the guys stepped on our outdoor spigot and sent a stream of water down the window well and into the basement. By the time I discovered it, the water had been turned off, but they never said anything to me until I confronted them. Lastly, Kevin had made a specific point in his sales pitch to me about the way they painted the side edge of the window trim to follow the zig-zag line created by the clapboards. When they finished painting the trim, I noticed that they did not do this. When I told him about it, he had the guys go back and re-do it, but not without a sense of annoyance.

Would I use Rutgers again, or pay them to do the repair work? Absolutely not. I'd rather pay someone to simply repaint my entire house, and hopefully do it right this time. I'm considering using JC Painting, who did what appeared to be a nice and thorough job on a house on Jefferson Ave. near mine. Any other recommendations?

We were initially satisfied with Rutgers when they painted our house back in 1999 - no complaints about messiness or careless workers, and there was always an english-speaking foreman - but the paint began to fail pretty badly after 4 years. And they did strip all the way down to the wood. I wouldn't use them again, either.

We used Mario's Painting last summer. They sanded the house down entirely and charged around $4K for a 3 bedroom house. They weren't terribly neat around the house (breaking bushes, spilling some paint), however we are very satisfied with the paint job on the house. Defintely worth the serveral thousand dollars we saved.
