What is with the "cut out" accross from the fire house being blocked now with NO PARKING SIGNS...Isn't this were the police officers were directing people to pick up passengers. I understand NO Pick ups right in the middle of Sloan Street, THATS A NO BRAINER AND IF YOU DO IT YOU DESERVE A TICKET...and Double parking in areas around the train station. I know you cannot block a firehouse so the cut out directly in front of the FD is out of question. But why is that area across from the FD now blocked when the police were recommending it only a couple of weeks ago? I was directed by an officer to that location on a few occasions. What happened? |

I thought that was the area that the FD uses to pull in the trucks so they always need it open. |

maybe it was becoming too much of a problem for people to drop off and pick up passengers there? maybe the police officer didn't realize the fire dept needed that area for the returning trucks? maybe they did it jst to tick you off? <g> |

Maybe the town needs to decide what they want from the commuters and stop all this TEMPORARY TEMPORARY TEMPORARY issues. POST A PROPER SIGN or REDESIGN THE ENTIRE AREA...THE ARCHITECH OF THAT STREET SHOULD BE STONED BY THE VILLAGE. |

mscott- that's a good idea for katie to run for office! i'd vote for her if she did! you know, there is a simple solution to your problem. use the commuter pick up and drop off in the back lot. so you might have t walk a little further, but at least you won't have to worry about when the parking rules changing around the fire dept. |

katie, the traffic on the other side makes it much more inconvenient for someone from the east side of town to make a pick up or drop off (it can take triple the usual trip time). If the center platform exit/entrance by wachovia were open, that would help alot. |

the S.O. jitney has only one route, and the times it runs are limited. doesn't work out for many commuters. |

There have been several threads about this. The jitney has one route now, but it's going to be expanded. I don't know the expansion schedule for expansion, but there are plans already. Perhaps the South Orange web site has more info? Or search through the threads here... Or maybe email John Gross jgross@southorange.org Waiting For The Electrician, Or Someone Like Him

To answer an earlier question: The Jitney costs $1 each way (you buy 10-trip booklets), or $150 for the year. I'm sure the town loses money on it. As it is now, it's generally pretty busy in the mornings, but sometimes on the way home it's just me and one or two other people on the jitney. It runs at limited times -- there's no service during the day -- but they have done a good job of pairing it with all the key NY departures and arrivals.

Any questions or comments about the jitney should be directed to mhartwyk@southorange.org (Mark Hartwyk is the executive director of the parking authority). The village was awarded a grant that should enable us to add three more routes by the end of next year. At one point we expect the jitney to run during the day and on weekends if possible. |

This isn't totally related to the Jitneys, but it could be. Mark: Whatever happened to the SHUttle...Weren't they providing transport for SHU students down to the Village Center and train station in the past(I know it did when I attended there years ago). Why can't SHU get on board with this...their students did ask for jitney service and they had the vehicles to provide this service. Another idea that was floated around campus 8 years ago...I have seen it at Marist College...the University and Town got together and share a drunk bus service that charges a small fee to transport students from the campus to the bar district on Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays? Maybe the town should ask SHU to transport their drunken noise makers to and from the downtown bars on big bar nights? Reducing the noise issues from walkers, and taking Drunk Drivers off the roads. Just an idea...I don't know if its a good one? |

m scott- i think it's a really bad idea to provide transportation for thu shu students to the bars. most of them are under the legal drinking age. instead, shu should pay for extra security armed with laptop computers at the places their students sneak into with their fake ids to snag them before they get into the bar to begin with. |

M. Scott: The village has discussed the possibility of SHU participating in the jitney program. We have basically told SHU that if they want jitney service they have to share in the cost. When we expand the program next year we will have enough jitneys (via a grant) to work with them.

i dont know about you guys but i avoid sloan street, SOA, and Vose as much as possible both driving and as a pedestrian. driving is a mess because of the commuters well not even them it is the people picking them up who think that if they put their hazard lights on they can park anywhere (i must have missed that memo that if you put your hazards on you are allowed to park anywhere for "just a minute") The police down there well some do a great job while others times i dont even think there is an officer there. i think that anyone who double parks or makes a left into a spot on sloan or who just sits and idles there should be ticketed because it is dangerous and causes congestion. i mean what happens if there is a fire or medical emergency on SOA between ridgewood and scotland road during rush hour? well i guess that the patient is SOL and the fire well it is going to burn for a bit simply because it will take emergency services such a long time to get to the location. i think that the police dept needs to hammer everyone and every violation anywhere near sloan street for a few weeks and that will probally take care of people casuing a mess down there....but thats just what i think... i know some of the west orange residents who pick up there might get upset but i think it is the price they will have to pay for coming to south orange and causing a traffic jam. |
