Does anyone know about growing bamboo? I heard it could make a fairly good "fence." Our backyard neighbors have an unsightly mess behind their garage, and have no plans to move any of their junk. I'd love to get advise on something that grows fast and strong so that we dont have to look at railings, cement mixer, tools, wheelbarrow, etc. much longer. If not bamboo, any other suggestions?

Bamboo is very difficult to control. It goes crazy and will take over the entire area, move into other yards, etc. We used to live in Bethesda, MD and they have a serious problem with bamboo in some neighborhoods. Someone else may have a good alternate suggestion. R |

There are two types of bamboo, clumping and spreading. Clumping doesn't spread and spreading does at a very, very fast rate. If you go this route be very careful of what you plant. |

I have a bamboo fence. You're welcome to take a look. The previous owner of my house planted it. My wife doesn't like it. The neighbor would prefer if we kept it but of course will defer to whatever we choose. My wife tried pruning it back last summer, and it was a lot of work. I hear if you cut a stalk, it spreads horizontally under the ground. In the summer, the stalks grow quickly. Then they bend over the driveway, and I have to clip them, which isn't really hard. Send me a privateline or email me at noglider@pobox.com if you want to take a look. Or look me up in the book. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Plant the bamboo in a large pot IN the soil. The roots will not be able to expand and you will have the privacy you want. |

Rebecca and I both know that the bamboo will haunt you forever. Our neighbor has some. When we moved in, it has invaded the entire back yard and had gotten under the house. We dug up the entire back yard 3 feet deep. We put up a steel retaining wall underground. Well, it broke through and is threatening our back yard again. We are going to spend several thousand more to get it dug up again and a new deeper wall put in. Remember, only one plant survived after Hiroshima - bamboo |

Imo bamboo is not appropriate aesthetically with the age and style of houses in Maplewood. How about a planting arborvitae's? |

If the area is really unsightly and could be dangerous and if you can bear being rather mean, you can advise the Township. They may elect to write the homeowner, advising him to clean it up. (This can be done about sidewalks, also.) |

What are you talking about, imacgrandma? Are you saying bamboo is unsightly and dangerous enough to involve the township? How so? Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Thanks everyone for your input about bamboo.... Tom, I believe what imacgrandma is referring to is what I have to look at out my back window. Unfortunately, these neighbors are unapproachable. The husband erected an illegal 6 foot wire fence partially along the property line. I asked him not to do it, so he did partial 6 foot and partial 4 foot. It's a long saga with these people. Geezzzz... if I thought for minute that the bamboo would only grow north into their property, I'd plant tomorrrow! This guy seems to be able to do whatever they want without any town interference. I called the building inspector a couple years ago about another building issue (no variance to build a new garage with a second floor), but to no avail. He's got the town on his side (but that's yet another saga!) |
