Mom always used to bring the shank bone but she isn't around any more so this year it's my turn. The only problem is that I haven't the faintest idea where to get one around here.

We don't eat much red meat, so we don't have a regular butcher. Besides, I don't need the meat, just the bone.

Advice welcome. Thanks in advance.

I bought lamb shanks recently at Whole Foods so you could try there - you could use the meat for another purpose.

Shoprite in Essex Green has them to hand out around the holiday, Joan. They are in the meat rack or, if not, just ask anyone in the meat department.

Ask the guy in Maple Kosher in the Millburn Mall. He'll give you one. So will any other kosher butcher.

They always have plenty at Zayda's on Irvington Ave. (at least, they do at Passover)

What is a lamb shank bone for, and its significance? When do you need it? I've got a couple of lamb shanks that I was going to cook this weekend and you're welcome to the bone (probably some time on Sunday), if it isn't too late.

The lamb shank bone is for the Passover Seder plate. It symbolizes the ancient Passover sacrifice of a lamb, whose blood was used to paint the doorways of the Jewish homes so that the angel of death would "pass over" their homes and not slay their first born sons (the 10th plague visited upon the Egyptians).

I know that many people use a roasted chicken leg, wing or neck in place of the lamb shank bone. Since Passover is still a month away, I would think it's a bit early to get the lamb bone now.

Too early?

I know someone who kept her shank bone in the freezer and pulled it out every year for use on the seder plate. Eventually, exposure to the air was enough to cause it to disintegrate!

Seriously, I agree it's too early to obtain one but not too early to plan.

All Shoprite and Kings give them out for free around Passover - just ask in meat department. The harder part is roasting them. I just put mine in an oven, usually with paprika on it to ensure it turns a nice color. It will get greasy so be sure to use plenty of tin foil, and I don't love the smell (so don't do it the same day as the holiday meal).

I had braised lamb shank last week for dinner & the bone is now sitting in my freezer. I think that this might be the first time ever I thought of it ahead of time, instead of right before the sedar.
