Trying to come up with a place to go - here are the parameters:
toddler friendly but not adult brain numbing.
Can be in September/October.
We're cost conscious - not too cheap, but not expensive.
Driving distance - within 8 hours - but pref 5.
Water near by or a pool.
Have been to Cape Cod and Cape May - both good - and are our defaults - just looking for some other ideas.

}Anyone?

How about the Outer Banks of North Carolina?

Was there 7 or 8 years ago (pre-kids) and it was very nice. It's a 7-8 hour drive.

Smugglers Notch in Vermont (near Stowe) about a 7 hr drive. In the summer they have a wonderful camp program for all ages (they're great with very young ones) leaving some alone time for parents to hike, lay around the pool, etc. In Sept/Oct, you can't beat Vermont for the fall foliage - but they don't have the camp programs then. Maxsdad beat me to it. We've used the day care and babysitting features at Smuggler's Notch and found our vacation there to be very soothing. We broke up the drive by staying up by Albany the first night (we left our house at around 6 pm) and then woke up bright and early go to Burlington. It was very nice. We've done the foliage trip for a number of years usually going the last week in Sept. first week in Oct. I'm guessing that if you go to Smuggler's for foliage you'll want to go a week or so prior (maybe 3rd week in Sept.).

I was going to suggest Pinegrove Dude Ranch. We just went and all five of us (kids almost 2, 6, 8) had a great time. Food was decent and plentiful, childcare was included, and they even had two cocktail parties per day which we took advantage of. Kids LOVED it. It was our best family vacation ever.

Virginia Beach - Sandbridge area, nearby, has affordable house rentals. Lots of activities nearby.
