In the past few months, we have started receiving mail addressed to people I've never heard of at our address. This isn't like the mail addressed to previous owners, but addressed to people with names I've never seen before. They're all sort of WASPy names. And what's curious is that all of this mail relates to credit cards / financing / lines of credit.

I think I read somewhere (or else I'm just paranoid and a privacy freak) that this is not good, that it means someone is running some sort of scam. Or something.

Have you heard of this? Does this mean anything to anyone?

Or am I truly paranoid?

It could be an innocent database mistake at a mailing house.

My concern would be -- is someone applying for credit using your address? They may be claiming to be part of the household.

Not sure how you could check on that -- I don't think your credit report would list inquiries against the same address? (don't know that for sure)

Pete

I suppose it could be an error, but repeatedly, over a couple of months, and from different senders? I'm chekcing Postal Service site now to see if this is a known occurrence.

This is probably "occupant" mail with a phony name to increase the liklihood that you will open it. Just a guess, but the Waspy names might be the clue. Anyone remember Robert H. Treller?

The fictional guy who use to sign all the Publishers Clearing House offers and ads. I use to do some business with that company and the name was choosen because it seems to project reliability, honesty and such. :-)

I would call the three main credit bureau's - ask for their fraud dept - this CAN be a hallmark of identy theft.

google: Experian, TRW and i forgot the last one - plus as a NJ resident - you're entitled to a free credit report a year - wouldn't be a bad thing...

We recently received what appeared to be a credit card sent to our address in the name of someone who is not a member of our household. We brought it back to the post office in person and asked that in the future only mail in the name of one of our household members be delivered to our house. If anyone else had a similar occurance, I would suggest contacting the post office. If they get enough feed back on this, they might conduct an investigation.

Most direct mail operations run their lists through a master database maintained by the Direct Mail Association and weed out bad addresses. You could always put the mail out for your letter carrier with a note saying "no one here by this name".

We had the same thing happen to us several months back. I contacted the credit card agencies and any other agencies that sent mail in this person's name. It was a pain in the a** but we haven't recieved anything since.

We have been getting mail for "Paul Rappoport" and "Norka Rappoport" at our address for the past year. I have spoken to our Post Office and they tell me they can't do anything except deliver it to the address shown. I've been writing "unknown at this address/return to sender" on every piece of mail, but no luck. It still keeps coming.

For at least 30 years, no one by either of these names has lived at this address, nor are they relatives. I did find an e-mail address for "Norka Rappoport" and asked if they knew there was a problem with their mail, but no luck - no response.

I'm fed up, too. I agree we should all contact the Postmaster for Maplewood and complain. I'll stop in on Saturday with the next batch of "Rappoport" mail.

Maybe I should start writing "Deceased?" and see if that gets through to anyone.

Norka rappoport lives here (or lived here) in Maplewood. She is or was a Tuscan Parent. Perhaps you can get her address and phone number from the Tuscan directory. Call her or forward her mail to her correct address.

Thanks - I'll try at the school to see if there was a forwarding address left with them. Post Office didn't have one and I've had no response to my e-mail. I'd hate to have that sort of mail floating around with my personal info on it, given the amount of identity theft going on.

Look up Norka Rappoport in the MSN white pages.
She lives here in town. The correct spelling may be Rapoport. I am hesitant to list contact information on an open board.

Cody, I know them as well. Perhaps you live on one of the streets in town that have similar names? Could that be how you keep getting their mail?

Thanks, everyone.

I will very soon be in touch with the family through a contact who knows them from Tuscan.

When I looked up the name originally, I looked under a variant of the spelling. I'm glad it's not a credit scam, and since they are in town, I can give them their mail directly and let them handle it as they wish.

Thanks so much, Morrisa da Silva, for pointing me in their direction! I feel so much better about this now!
