I'm looking for a referral for a good female OGBYN. I'd like to deliver at St Barnabas (from what I hear,it's better than Overlook...comments?). I'd also like my doctor to be in a group of other female doctors and have evening office hours. Am I shooting for the moon? Any help would be appreciated. |

I delivered 2 kids in the last 3 years at Overlook. One was in the NICU for 14 days (low birth weight) and one was held in the nursery for 5 (jaundice). They only have private L&D and recovery rooms and they let you board (no cost to me - basically just an empty hospital room) if your baby is stuck there for a bit. I had a very good experience That being said I have heard that Barnabas has a much more advance NICU unit if something unexpected happens. My kids didn't have any severe problems so the NICU at Overlook was fine for them. I have also heard Barnabas referred to as a "baby factory", which can be good (more births = more experience) or bad (few private rooms, less personal attention). But lots of folks have had great experiences there. My Dr is Maureen Whalen from Summit Med Ctr, she practices out of Short Hills. Only delivers at Overlook though. Good luck! |

I switched to Tammy Hamilton after I had my kids, based on recs on this board. I think that the other doctors in her practice are male, however. I'm pretty sure that she delivers at St. Barnabas. Her office is just up the street from the hospital on Northfield Ave. |

Dr. Doreen DeGraff at West Essex OB/GYN is great! SHe has two other female partners who are lovely and two male partners (each of whom ended up delivering my babies) who I love as well. They do have evening hours and are affiliated with St. B. I have had both of my babies at St. B and while, yes, they are a baby factory (more than 7000 births per year), the nurses are amazing and the care is unparalleled. Good luck! |

I delivered at Overlook and absolutely loved it. My OB had privileges at both Overlook and St. B. and we were originally going to go St. B. Then I found out that there were no private rooms, the baby couldn't room in, and my husband couldn't stay overnight. We quickly switched to Overlook and I can't recommend it enough. The rooms were large and comfortable, the nurses were exceptional. The baby roomed in with me and they provided my husband with a cot so he could stay with us. The OB I used is in a solo practice, so not what you are looking for, but I'll give you her info anyway - Anne Marie Campbell in Millburn. I recommend her as well. Good luck! |

I delivered both at Overlook and Barnabas. I definitely prefer Overlook over Barnabas. Overlook has private rooms (although I heard Barnabas was getting them) and the nursing staff was exceptional. When I was at Barnabas the nurses came in two to three times a night to check on me, never allowing me to sleep. At Overlook they came in once to make sure I was okay, and left me alone. |

I recently delivered at St. Barnabas and had an excellent experience there. I felt that the nursing care was exceptional and the baby was able to room in with me. The nurses are also very helpful with breastfeeding. I use Daria Klachko in West Orange. She's phenomenal. I cannot say enough good things about her. She is in practice with Susan Pitman, who I also really like, and one other female doc who I have not yet met. I believe they have evening hours. Good Luck. |

Both of my kids were born at Overlook. Maternity and L&D have recently been renovated and are beautiful. The nursing staff have been delivering babies for decades. Rhona Magaril would be an excellent choice. |

Kriss: Unless things have changed recently Anne Marie Campbell does not have a solo practice - last I knew Jackie Dix shared the practice with her and she gets good ratings from former colleagues of mine as well. I like Dr. Campbell a lot: very competent, funny, intelligent. My experience has been GYN only. Yes to the great nursing care at Overlook! A year ago I spent three weeks there on two different floors, they were outstanding! And I know nursing care, having worked in hospitals for the past twenty years. Cathy |

My wife is an MD and she choose to have both of our kids at Overlook. The rooms are amazing since they just renovated the hold L&D suite a few years ago. The nurses are alsoamazing. Rhona Magaril was my wife's OB and she was also great. On the NICU issue, I asked my wife about this once before when it came up here. Overlook has (if memory serves) a level 2 NICU while St. B has a level 3. The odds of your needing the level 3 are incredibly slim and the only difference is in some of the equipment (the docs at Overlook are the same ones that work in the level 3 NICU at Morristown Memorial). (This all assumes a normal pregnancy of course.) |

Cathy, Dr. Campbell shares office space with Dr. Dix, but my understanding is that they have two separate (solo) practices. I never ever saw or even met Dr. Dix, and was told that if for some reason Dr. Campbell couldn't make it to my birth (because she had another patient in delivery) she had an arrangement with another colleague who would fill in for her, but that doctor was not Dr. Dix. Luckily Dr. C. didn't have any other patients go the day I did and she delivered our son. She was wonderful and I recommend her, but I think the original poster was looking for a larger practice where you have the opportunity to get to know the other docs through routine visits, etc. |

St. B does have private rooms - I stayed in one 10 months ago when my son was born. It was wonderful - like staying in a hotel with excellent medical attention to boot. I can't say enough good things about the staff there! My L&D nurse was kind and sweet. The floor nurses rotate among the nurseries and the anti- and post-partum units. Thus, we received excellent care from nurses who knew what my son and I needed before we did. He would have roomed in with me, but needed to stay in the NICU and then the step-down unit for a few days. Staff in both units were excellent; the neonatologist and my pediatrician visited me in my room daily with updates on his care. I am very happy with Associates in OB/GYN in West Orange, however I may switch because they dropped several insurance carriers, including mine. The practice is comprised of two men and four women, but two of the men no longer do deliveries. |

I switched my doctor to Christine Masterson (and Robert Rubino) in West Orange & Summit specifically because they delivered at Overlook. I was extremely pleased with their practice in terms of professionalism and efficiency. Although our labor & delivery was positive at St B with our 1st, the postpartum was miserable. My husband feels that it was the lack of space and overworked nurses that caused our daughter to be prematurely admitted to NICU. Our experience last month at Overlook was incredible by comparison. The majority of the rooms are private (allowing for easy rooming-in) and the staff was very friendly. Because it's a smaller and quieter hospital, they were also more relaxed on visiting hours for family). They were also so pro-breast-feeding that I had to give them permission to give our son a pacifier. By comparison, our near 7 lb daughter was prescribed unlimited formula as soon as she was admitted to NICU at St B. We were not consulted at all on our preferences for feeding and I was given very little support on establishing breastfeeding. |

I also recommend Anne Marie Campbell in Milburn (you can't beat the location). She's got a great personality and comfortable interaction with patients. The only drawback is that she's very popular and you often have to wait a long time to see her. But, since I avoid most doctors and tend to stay with whomever I pick first, I can't say if the wait is longer than other doctors. I just make sure to bring lots of reading material and try to schedule when I don't have to rush off somewhere else. Also, I can't say how she is for pre-natal and delivery since I had my kid with another doctor in the city. |

Hi. I saw this thread it's quite propitious since my wife's looking for a new OB/GYN. but my question is... Can anyone reccomend a good male OB/GYN in the area? My wife prefers to go to a male (she's just had better experiences with male OB/GYNs). Thanks |

Good male OB/GYN: Dr John Simonetti at Associates for Female Health in Millburn. Saw me through two pregnancies and deliveries four and two years ago,and continues to be among my favorite doctors ever. Both babies were born at St B's but he does Overlook too. Good luck! |

Neil Russo at Physicians for Women's Health in Livingston. I prefer a female doctor but like him a lot. My primary there is a woman--Tammy Hamilton, but I saw him quite a few times and he delivered my second kid and is lovely. |

Also at Associates for Female Health: Richard Luciani. He's my doctor, and I like him very much - he never seems to be in a hurry during appointments, and he's called me to follow up on discussions that we've had or problems, without my having made the initial call to him. |

FYI, doctors at Associates for Female Health in Millburn no longer deliver at Overlook. They're strictly St. B's these days. I see Dr. Simonetti, and i like him a lot so far... he's always so cheerful and singing. But i've got another 12 weeks to go before the real test... |

New Neighbor, Are referring to Dr. Stephen Crane at Assoc. in OB/GYN in WO? He's very nice, as are the five other docs at that practice. I started going to them on a recommendation from a friend and was not disappointed. I received excellent care from them throughout my pregnancy last year. (Delivered at St. B.) Only drawback is that they have dropped most insurance carriers. |

Slow Dog, Joanne Sommers in Livingston has one or two female associates. I didn't use her as an OB, but went to her after my children were born and really like her a lot. She is located right next to Barnabus, and I'm pretty sure that is where she delivers. I used two different OBs, both at St. Barnabus, and had very positive experiences. One, Dr. Regina Kaplan, delivers at both hospitals, depending on the needs of the patients.(She goes to Barnabus for risky situations.) She was an amazing OB, but both dropped my insurance and wasn't quite as available as a Gyn, thus my switch to Dr. Sommers. |

Assoc. in OB/GYN in WO has both male and female doctors and my experiences there have been positive. My sister also goes to them and just had a baby at St. Barnabas, which she had no complaints about. |
