Hi! Hope someone can help me. I have been struggling with this for weeks. I have a cable modem connected to a Router that is also connected to a wireless access point. My laptop (Windows XP Professional) has a wireless PC card and doesn't have problems finding the access point and connecting to the router, thus I can access the Internet. My PC (Windows XP Home) has a wireless adapter connected to the USB port. The PC can see the access point but can not find the router, thus I can not access the Internet. Also, the PC can not identify an IP address. In fact, even if I type in the IP address, I can not access the Internet. Sometimes I use the lapptop at the same desk where the PC is located, so distance from the access point or router is not the problem. In fact, the PC maintains a stronger signal to the access point which sits on top of the router. I had read that sometimes there can be problems with wireless connections and Windows XP, but I have not had any success finding the answer. Please help! I don't want to have wires running throughout my home. Thank a bunch!! |

On the desktop, do start->run and then type "cmd" You'll get a window for typing commands. Type "ipconfig /all" and hit enter. What does it say in response? Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

shauna mc - I've reset all of the equipment a few times and no change. Sylad - I should have mentioned that I'm just a PC novice, so I know just enough to be dangerous! Since I'm using a wireless USB adapter do I need to worry about the NIC? The last time I checked (which has been awhile), I was able to conncet to the Internet using a hardwire connection. Maybe I should check again - which means moving the PC. In any case, how do I check the security settings of the desktop and NIC? Tom - I'll send you a private line since the response is a long one. Thanks for all your help! I'm still trying... |

NIC is a generic term, a Wireless USB adapter is a wireless NIC (network interface card) Is your net encrypted? If so make sure the USB has the same settings as the router. What brand is your wireless USB? I have a Belkin I use to connect a MAC to my network and the instructions that came with it were wrong, I had to call Belkin to get it set up correctly. |

any encryption on the router? you'd have to match it on the laptop. Are you getting a wireless signal, but no connection? |

Sylad, I believe the USB has the same settings as the router. I am using Linksys products. I have called Linksys several time and they have not been able to fix the problem. I think it is a Microsoft XP Home problem. I fear that I will need to pay the outrageous MS technical support fee to resolve my problem. Thanks for the help! |
