I am thinking of getting a Califronia-closets place to come in for our new house--the clutter is out of control and I'd like to forestall it going forward. Any recommendations?

Check the attic. I recommended Don Glinsky— Closets by Glinsky. I believe another poster Alan used him also and was very pleased. I don't have his number offhand, but I know he's listed. Hes in the Hillsborough area.
He did a large master closet for us and we were very happy.

shh-- Did you have really small closets to begin with? I have always wondered if that would work for us. All of our closets are fairly small, so I don't understand what they would do to improve the situation?

Well, when we moved in we did, but we initially made a full wall in our old bedroom a closet (only about 9 feet wide, it was the wall w/ the door) but we installed the shelving ourselves from a Closet Maid type kit. It's held up, but it lacks flexibilty and there's a lot of wasted space.
About two years ago we did an addition and converted an existing bedroom into a master closet and bath space. The closet is not as big as I would like it to be (it's about 6x9 feet, but I have to share) so I knew I needed to plan it out well for it to work. I looked at our clothes/shoes and figured out what we needed and did some planning myself, then Don came in and tweaked it. I like his product because it's floor mounted, almost like a backless bookcase, and the shelves/rods can be used in any position, so it's really flexible. So, if I decide to throw out 10 pairs of shoes, I can put a hanging rod where the 3 shelves used to be, and buy a dozen shirts to fill the space.
We do have other small closets in the house, and in just about every single one I've put a combination of cubbies and hanging rods. It makes a huge difference—and that's whether or not you have a pro do it or buy inexpensive shelving from HD or Target and do it yourself.

I was very happy with Closet Factory. Shirley was our designer, and she was terrific. We actually got a better price for the same design from a competitor, but I liked Shirley better -- so I called her and asked if she could meet the price. She did, and I saved about 20%!
