The Daily Life of American Women will be celebrated at Durand-Hedden Open House on Sunday, March 14. Historical interpreter Stacy F. Roth will explore the private thoughts and popular image of women of the 17th and 18th centuries through songs, quotations, poetry and prose. In this unique presentation from a revolving repertoire, audiences can meet humble heroines, brave Amazons, bold actresses, wise wits, warriors in disguise, and backbones of society. Ms. Roth will sing songs by and about women from folk, popular, and theater traditions, and illustrate the struggles, triumphs and private thoughts of women both renowned and little known, with a special emphasis on women of New Jersey. She accompanies herself occasionally on guitar, penny whistle and concertina. In addition, Laura Schenone, local author of A Thousand Years Over a Hot Stove: A History of American Women Told Through Food, Recipes and Remembrances, will be speaking on women’s daily lives and signing copies of her book. (Ms. Roth will be at the event from 1-4 pm, while Ms. Schenone will be there from 1.30 to 3.) The event will take place from 1-4 pm at 523 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood.
