Sometimes, maplewoodonline is hard to keep up with, such as when there's a hot topic or argument up for discussion (or when I'm actually trying to do work). OTOH, those folks in Millburn, well, they certainly do seem to have a lot less to say. No one's posted on politics for almost seven months. Most forums haven't seen action in days. And only one forum has had a posting today -- and it's mine. Why do you think this is so? |

My theory: Better interface on the message board. This one is attractive and intuitive. |

Well, as the "owner" of millburnweb.com, I cannot say that I am surprised. Marvin Gardens probably has touched on a point. If you look at the community message boards on NJ.com, you will see that there is a substantial amount of activity on the Maplewood/SO forum and hardly any on the Millburn/Short Hills forum. And, NJ.com has been around a lot longer than Millburnweb.com. However, the amount of messages on the M/SO forum on NJ.com just about dwarfs the activity for almost any other town. There is much less of a sense of activism in Millburn than in M/SO. For example, there has been a big controversy in Millburn over the spending at the Board of Ed. However, at the recent Board of Ed meetings, there have only been 4 or 5 people in the audience. The Millburn Item even poked fun at this a few weeks ago by printing a front-page picture of the audience at a Board of Ed meeting. MillburnWeb is slowly catching on. But, people are reticent to post. I have been criticized by some people in town over "allowing" posts which show the town in a negative light. On the other hand, as much as I enjoy being on MaplewoodOnline, I feel that people have become much too dependent on it. Sometimes it seems like people have to post an question here and wait for a reponse before doing anything. Marc www.millburnweb.com

they think they're on easy street. everyone can afford the taxes so what's there to gripe about. if they gripe they'll be accused of griping. they sweep things under the rug. as soon as something big happens they'll need an outlet, but not until then.
