I am looking for someone who will cut my lawn once a week or so...and not charge me an arm and leg to do so.
My yard is small in the front and not too large in the back.
Any recommendations?

If you don't want someone to charge you an arm and a leg, you shouldn't contact any professional outfits. I'd checked prices with about 10 landscaping services recommended here on MOL and learned that they all do! Ranging from $40 to $80 every time they work on my modest size yard. I'm going to hire a local teenager.

I've used Dean Weiss since I moved to S.O. and, although he isn't great about returning calls, he does a good job and charges us around $124 per month for weekly mowings. We have a large yard too.

Oriental Gardeners. The owner lives in town, too, so you're supporting a local business. I think our price was $60 per month last summer.

We use Lou Volpe. He charges us $80/mo. for weekly mowings. He's a one man operation basically so he's responsive when you call him. I don't have his number here but can get it if you are interested.

My husband may be available. I need to get him out of the house on weekends. Otherwise, he watches soccer all day, gulping his Guiness. I could lend him to you for $20 a cut. I need to get some money back on my so-called "investment."

Handygirl, how big is your lot? We pay more than than for a 0.5 acre lot, but my bigger complaint is with the random price increases. I'm considering checking around this year. While we have been here two years, the guy who helps us informed us soon after we moved in that he had already been mowing the lawn for more than ten years, so we never got other price quotes.

The other thing that bothered me last year is that we were charged the same price every month with no discount for weeks when it rained and they did not come (which was at least a few times). We agreed on a weekly rate the first year and it became a monthly rate (with increase) the following year.

Please note that ALL LANDSCAPERS APPLYING ANY KIND OF PESTICIDE, HERBICIDE, FUNGICIDE, WEEDKILLER, ETC. IS REQUIRED TO BE LICENSED BY THE NJDEP. Ask your landscaper to show you the wallet size license that they are required to carry, if they are using the above materials. Licensing requires that they pass a test on how to safely use the materials and requires that they are insured.

I would also go with Oriental Gardners. Muoi (the owner) and his crew have been doing a great job here for 6 years! Reasonably priced. Phone # 973-762-4699

jab - sorry for the delay in responding. My lot is also .5 acre. I would definitely find another landscaper. I can't tolerate random price increases with not notice. If you agree on a price and the landscaper decides to increase that price, he/she should absolutely notify you in advance and give you the opportunity to go elsewhere if you are not happy with the increase.
