Some friends will be in Manhattan for the weekend so we are meeting on Saturday night - any recommendations as to where is good to eat? A NYC classic would be good. Or preferably near to Penn.

what sort of cuisine? We went to a small french bistro not far from Penn which was really nice.

http://www.madisonbistro.com/

On 48th and 9th is one of my favorites, Delta Grill. Very casual cajan type food, maybe a little loud though.

I haven't been in years but in Chelsea is:
Gascogne 22 20 21 $46
158 Eighth Ave. (bet. 17th & 18th Sts.) New York, NY, 10011 (212) 675-6564
“Tucked away” in Chelsea, this “first-rate” bistro is the “real” Gallic deal with Southern French “country” cooking served in “dark”, “cozy”, “romantic” digs; “Francophiles” find it a “respite” especially when dining in the “delightful” garden.

Mummite,

NYC is the food capital of the world. I'd be super happy to share recommendations if you narrow down with some constraints... time, cuisine, price, atmosphere, etc.

Enjoy!

I think Carmine's is fun! http://www.carminesnyc.com/

It's all family style, and the portions are ridiculous! There's 2, the original is on the upper West Side, but there's also one just off Time Square.

Carmine's is a step above Burger King. It amazes me that in a city with such excellent choices, including ones that won't break the bank, bridge and tunnel people gravitate to the overhyped and pedestrian time and time again. It is as if when people move out to NJ, they leave their taste buds and their discrimination behind.

Thanks for the useful suggestions.

We ended up at 'Seven' Bar and Grill which is literally about 1 minute walk from NJtransit at Penn. (It was listed on Madison Square Garden's website and found at 350 7th Ave)

Food was good, beer was cold, lively atmosphere and we had a booth-type table which was perfect as the whole point was to catch up with our friends.
