Hello, We lost our little silky terrier this afternoon, who goes by the name of Rozzie. She is a small, eight pound, silver and brown dog who has a sweet disposition and all her shots. She is almost twelve,so we are worried that she may be disoriented and very scared. Also, she just had her bath so she's not wearing her tags. She was last seen around 1pm, March 3, on the corner of Harvard and Prospect. Please call if you see her! 917.523.3624 or 973.313.0595. Thank you very much. Joel and Melissa |

Alas, Maplewoody, no, we have not found her. We have posted signs all over town and are hopeful that she stayed in Maplewood and is in the care of a kind samaritan. I will give posting her pic here a go. Let's see if I can do it... If anyone else has suggestions of what else we can do to help recover our beloved dog, please feel free to post here! Thanks. Joel, Make sure you contact the Jersey Animal Coalition, all local vets and the police. Someone might find her and turn her in to one of this places. Good luck and I hope she turns up real soon. Nancy Chiller Janow On a coffee break..or something like it.

Hello, We still haven't found our little dog. She has been spotted in the Union area (Revere and Laurel Ave), but she is still hopefully out and about. If anyone can recommend any places to call or things to do to help, we would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who has called with information or support. Joel and Melissa |

A friend of mine left an article of clothing in the spot where they lost their dog, a day or so later - the dog was right next to it. This was in a State forest, not sure if it would be as effective in the burbs. |

Good morning, kind Maplewood friends, It may be that Rozzie has (unfortunately) began to move southwest, deeper into Union. We are only six months here in New Jersey, so our geography is spotty, but there were two calls about her being spotted first close to Millburn Ave -- further west than we had previously heard, then Thursday morning on Vaux Hall, running in the street by 78 (a terrible thing). We could not be sure that these callers were accurately IDing Rozzie, but seeing as we haven't seen *any* other dogs in the streets since we began looking for her, we have to give them credence. It had seemed that after crossing Springfield, she had been hemmed in by the busy streets on all sides (Springfield to the north, Burnett Ave to the south, Vaux Hall and Burnett/Boyden to the east and west). If she has moved past Vaux Hall/Burnett, it makes it so much less safe for her in those busy streets and also makes it so hard for us to know how to try to find her! It seems as if the world becomes so much bigger, harsher and more cruel past those boundaries. Again, she has no tags on and she's so small, a wee eight pounds. The weather has been dreary enough to make us very worried about her exposure as well. She's not used to begin outside. Again, any suggestions or leads would be so appreciated. We are really deeply concerned and very very sad and upset. Thank you so much again. Not to insult the generosity of everyone who has freely called and offered their time and information, but a substantial reward will also be given to anyone who can help reunite us. Just a quick chronology of events that may or may not be helpful. Seeing it in order may help us too: 1. Wed, March 3, noon: Roz leaves our backyard through a mistakenly opened gate in the back. 2. Wed. 12:30pm A woman tells us that Roz has been seen "on the other side of Prospect." We take this to mean that she is on the west side of the street on Prospect, heading north, and tell people she was seen on Prospect and Harvard. 3. Wednesday afternoon and evening: Continuing the idea that she is somewhere north of us on Harvard and Bowdoin, we drive and walk as much of that area as we can. We post signs by Columbia High School, the Middle School, the train station, Maplewood Ave, Tuscan elementary, and Springfield Ave. We hope that the busy street of Springfield, which is just south of us would prove a boundary. 4. Thursday morning and afternoon: A resident who lives south of Springfield calls in the morning, tell us she definitely saw Roz walking south on Prospect on her side of Springfield around 12 or 1pm. This tells us that we misinterpreted the first woman's observation that Roz was "on the other side of Prospect" and were wrong about Springfield being a barrier to her. We've been looking in the wrong place and have no signs there. I spend the next hour or so putting posters up south of Springfield. When I am posting outside a beauty salon by Laurel and Ohio, the owner comes out and tells us: -She has seen Roz. Roz sat on her doorstep Wednesday night, shaking, waiting to be noticed by the people there. -She was noticed by the father of someone getting his haircut there. He brought Roz to their attention, and they all knew she wasn't a stray and they needed to do something. -The man volunteered to take her home with him. He has a dog already, and they could wait and see if the owners came. -She would take our number, forward it to him, and have him call us. We could pick her up at the beauty salon. Obviously we were ecstatic. We left our numbers and went home to wait. 5. Thursday afternoon: While home, we received another very specific message from a man: He had seen Roz in his truck Wednesday night. He almost hit her with his car, because she darted across the street with a German Shepard. It was on the corner of Revere and Laurel and it was 10-10:30pm. I was relieved and confused. The neighborhood matched exactly where the beauty salon was, that was one block away from where she was picked up. He was certain, from the flyer pictures, that it was her. In fact, the next morning, he looked for the flyers to call, because he knew that Roz was not a stray. But the time was later than she should have been out. I mistakenly dismissed that as an error. 6. Later Thursday, March 4: The afternoon came and went. No call. The early evening came. We called and were told that he had been called and told we were looking, but he was at work and hadn't called back. When he finally called at 7pm, he told us that he had, in fact, taken Roz, but on the way home was informed by his wife that she wanted no more dogs in the house. Rather than call the police or a shelter or a friend, he turned around, drove her back and put her back on the darkened, now closed, doorstep of the beauty salon! We were completely heartbroken and unavoidably outraged. We had lost the entire day, and while it had been nine hours since we were told about him having her, even worse, it had now been 24 hours since that had happened. She had now, at least for some time, been running with a Shepard and could be anywhere. It had also rained that night and become colder. 7. Thursday night: We spent from 7pm to 12:30am driving the Hillside area of Maplewood, going from where Burnett Ave intersects Springfield going south, all the way west to Vaux Hall. We talked to people who had seen Roz on Hilton headed east (but that was Wednesday afternoon) and kids who may or may not have been telling the truth about seeing her Thursday afternoon on Hilton by herself. We ended the night without a sighting of her on that day, knowing only that she was still out and may have been led past her boundaries (or to safety) by another dog. Now she was out for a second night away from home. (continued in another post) |

Sorry that this has become so long -- I must also get out and begin looking again for Roz -- but let me quickly finish this chronology. 8. Friday, March 5. Spent the morning postering as much of the Hilton area as I could, especially the western part, starting from Vaux Hall and working by the school on Hilton and around that area. We had begun calling vets and police departments in earnest the day before (called the police department first on Wed night) and now began to call Shelters. Placed an ad in the Newark Star-Ledger (don't know when it will start running), prepared one for the Union and M-Wood/S.Orange local paper to run Thursday. 9.. Got a call from a woman Friday between 3-4pm, who continually described Rozzie incorrectly (a white, stocky dog)but insisted it was her and that she saw her Thursday morning on her way to work, walking in the street on Vaux Hall in morning traffic. People were trying to get her to come to the sidewalk, but she refused. She told my wife she was "headed in the direction of Union." We have misread every piece of info thus far, but to me that sounded like she was heading south on Vaux Hall -- and away from what I perceived to be safer boundaries. She also had a huge head start and was obviously disoriented, cold, and hungry -- being outside, at that time for almost 48 hours. I truly hope that was not her, but as I said, we have seen no other stray dogs in the many hours we have spent outside. No other word. Foggy last night, but looked again in the Revere/Laurel area. Found the owner of the "Shepard" who lives right on that corner. She said that he normally gets out and runs only in a two block radius from the house and always alone. Roz looks like the only other dog he would run with, but smaller, which may account for their brief partnership that night. That's all the info. It has been helpful for us to write it, just to get it all down. It's now been almost 72 hours since she has been away from us. Our big hope is that, like she did with the beauty salon, she will find help and go to people for shelter. She is extremely smart and also extremely pretty. She is certainly not threatening. We hope she has been able to get inside and with people who can look after her. Then time can lead her to us. On the other side, she has never been outside overnight, never been without someone she knew well ever. She is 12 and small. Her eyesight and her hearing have, at times, been questioned. She's never had to get her own food or water. If she hasn't found the help of strangers, we need to find her immediately. Every second counts. Thanks again to the concerned members of this board. Joel- let us know if there is anything we can do tomorrow(Sunday)-anywhere to try to look or to post more flyers. We are thinking of you. BTW, did you go to the Union shelter on Jefferson street? |

You might want to drop a flyer off with local vets in case anyone finds her and brings her in as a "stray" to be checked out. Also, Associated Humane Societies gets "stray" dogs, so you might want to give them a heads-up about Rozzie. That way, if any of these people find her, they'll know to call you immediately. They have a few locations scattered around - I know there is one in Newark, I'm not sure about Union. I'm keeping my eyes open for her and have told my neighbors as well, but I'm not quite where you are hearing that Rozzie has been. Have you dropped flyers off with the food establishments on Springfield Ave? If she is out there and hungry, she might be looking for food and be attracted to those places. I really hope you find her - I have a dog and know how I would feel if he were wandering on his own. |

Sorry to double-post, but I can't edit this in to the previous post - "web site not responding"! Anyway, did you put signs up by St. Joseph's church and school? It's in the Hilton area and perhaps some children walking to school or people going to church might see Rozzie.

I find the behavior of that "father" reprehensible and antisocial. That he actually had your dog, knew the situation, and abandoned her (with his child in the truck, if I'm reading this correctly) should be criminal. I truly hope you find your Rozzie; I know the pain of having a lost pet. And I think that man should be charged with animal cruelty. |

Good morning, From what we've been able to gather talking with people yesterday, Rozzie was spotted again on Laurel Avenue and Hilton. Two people saw her by the Dunkin Donuts, one time headed southwest on Hilton towards Vaux Hall, another time turning the corner and heading back southeast down Laurel. If the two engaging, adamant but inebbriated men at Dunkin Donuts can be believed, she was seen there Friday night around 10:30pm. That would mean that she is definitely staying in the area bordered by Springfield, Vaux Hall, Prospect and Burnett. However, all the news we hear is at least a day old, and there is a story or two that could place her either north of Springfield and west of Millburn or further south down Vaux Hall further into Union. Thanks again for all your support and advice. We have checked the animal shelters, consulted with vets, gone door to door and left flyers on cars (we discovered that many people in our heavily fliered areas had not seen them on the telephone poles), checked dumpsters on Springfield... But we will continue to do all of those things. We have yet to adequately poster on Springfield west of Millburn ave and east of Prospect. Thanks again. Joel and Melissa |
