When is the village going to get around to filling all of the potholes? Scotland Road is more like the road to Kandahar with all of the craters. Last night a NJT bus veered into oncoming traffic to avoid running into a rather large hole. This is becoming dangerous! thirdgearrocks

I agree, even driving down South Orange Ave is terrible because they havent raised the manholes! The thing that bothers me the most though is when you are driving down centre street and come to the light at South Orange Ave. The area before the light is so bumpy! It would take two seconds to pave that but it has neer been done! |

Aren't South Orange Ave and Scotland Road (As well as Wyoming) county roads and isn't Essex County responsible for maintaining them? That said, there are alot of potholes on our roads and now that the weather is finally getting more springlike, and the snow seems to be over, I am sure that the filling of them is on tap. It might be beneficial to start a list here so that one of the trustees could send it over to Road Maintainance so that they will know where to start?

yes, librarylady Essex county road department is responsible for the pot holes on SOA and Scotland road. The county knows about it but as far as I know you really can not fill pot holes and keep them filled if the ground is too cold. the blacktop will not stick or hold. |

TJR..I knmow that..That is why I added that we had to wait for more "springlike"weather. Also, as usual, Mary and Chasm, were trying to lay the blame for the county roads on the village when it is the county's responsiblity. When is the village going to get around to filling all of the potholes Nancy Chiller Janow On a coffee break..or something like it.

you fill the potholes temporarily, [just like NYC does] saving residents from danger and damage, or you do nothing, until election time, and then what the trustees will do is say they could do nothing because, well, just because. ever hear of town employees arrested for patching pot holes or county roads? be brave township, be very brave. RIGHT...SOUTH ORANGE IS GONNA FILL POT HOLES ON A COUNTY ROAD FOR FREE....I LIKE THE IDEA, AND SEE THAT IT WOULD BE THE EASY THING TO DO...BUT LAUGH AT THE THOUGHT OF IT ACTUALLY BEING CONSIDERED! WAIT UNTIL AUGUST WHEN YOUR COUNTY TAX DOLLARS TRICKLE DOWN TO THE POT HOLE ON SCOTLAND ROAD. ALSO DON'T FORGET THE COUNTY WILL PATCH IT DURING RUSH HOUR SNARLING TRAFFIC AS USUAL. |

Yes, South Orange should fill the potholes on country roads, something that it not budgeted for and then it should go back to the taxpayers and say "hey, we patched the roads, didn't we and now we need to raise the money by increasing your taxes" SOUTH ORANGE IS GONNA FILL POT HOLES ON A COUNTY ROAD FOR FREE M. Scott, ain't nothing free. |

I could have told you that...I think were lucky South Orange fills their own potholes...im still waiting for certain streets to be repaved...or at least have rain sewers installed (RALSTON or is it RAYMOND that still has run off ditches?). Or howabout those temporary deadend streets with big plastic barricades that people drive up and over the lawns to get around. WHY DO SOMETHING RIGHT WHEN HALF PRICED AND HALF ASSED IS CHEAPER! |

tjr542 says that the county knows about the problem (how do you know?) and Librarylady is defending the town. Ok, but this doesn't solve the problem. Well, if Essex knows, then the town should get them here to fix the holes ASAP. The village should be working for the good of the residents. The holes are becoming dangerously large, and there will be injuries and/or an accident. thirdgearrocks

I proposed salaried employees patch holes, during work hours. Big expense. Maybe it will help keep them busy until the next snow storm. Maybe they can shovel sand into the biggest holes, every day, until the county finishes the new jail and turns to law abiding taxpayers. DWM |

Who? what exactly do you think DPW does? do you really think all they do is plow the roads? that have a large range of duties from sanitiation, sewer maintence, taking care of all the playing fields in town, trimming trees and other tasks. They are very busy and work hard. perhaps since you think they dont have enough to do one day this summer you should spend the day working with them, i would be willing to bet you no longet have this view. So yes it would be a large expense to have DPW employees break from regular tasks to focus all their attention on pot holes. Since it would create overtime. i do agree there is a problem but like anything else to fix it there will be a cost associated with it. |

gee, filling potholes does seem too much in light of your post. I take back the suggestion that town employees go the extra yard for the taxpayers. DWM |

I just called the department of Public Works to discuss the potholes on Scotland Road (and the flat tire I got from one of them) and the very nice man there thanked me for calling and said they would be fixed by the end of this week. Fingers crossed. |

last time i checked scotland road was a county road. i would be suprised if SO DPW patched it. the man may have been trying to appease you. i would suggest a call to Essex County Highway just to ensure they are aware of it. BTW- that is a huge pothole on scotland. |

The major potholes on Scotland Road got fixed today. The Essex county department of public works, to whom I reported the problem on March 15, where very polite and did the work almost when they said they would. I am very grateful we got a prompt response. |
