I have a Dell P4 1.60 GHz with 256 MB of RAM. How much improvement would I receive by doubling my RAM? Is $64 a good price for 256 MB of RAM? Thanks in advance.

What is the speed of the memory you have? Check the specs for the model.

PC2100? PC2700? If either one, go to OfficeMax or Staples where they're ususally on sale and end of costing between $15 and $20 after rebates.

You'll definitely see a difference (but it's really impossible to tell by how much without understanding how much clutter you've acquired)

512 would definitely be better.

Rule of thumb. Install the fastest chips, and all the system will hold.

Why? Memory is cheap and the software will need it now and in the future.

Rule of thumb. Install the fastest chips(that your motherboard can support), and all the system will hold.

Jeff, check the specs.

Go to Control Panel and click on System, it should show on the first screen there.

One thing to check first is how the ram is installed presently. If there are two slots and each is taken with a 128 meg chip - then you would have to remove both of them and replace with 2 256 meg chips.

Is this a laptop?

Desktop. All that it says is 256 MB RAM. I'll just open it up and figure it out but I'm not sure if that will answer sbenois's suggestion re: specs.

Great idea.

Jeffl, post what you need as I'm sure someone has some old unused memory looking for a new owner. I've got some that you can have if it's the right fit...

I have one open slot into which I can put a 256 MB PC2100 chip. If anyone has one I'd appreciate it. Otherwise, I'll head to Rt. 22. Thanks.

http://www.oempcworld.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?&Store_Code=O

But there are 100's of sites like it. Just search under RAM.
