Can anyone please tell me how one would go about making a donation to the South Orange Police Bullet Proof Vest Fund? I understand that the department does not pay for new bullet proof vests for the Police Officers who protect us day in and day out. I know from a family member that this is a very extreemly nessary and expensive piece of equipment, anywhere from $750.00 - $2500.00 and they have a shelf life / warranty of 5 years. Which means that these vests need to be replaced every 5 years.

I am not sure who exactly you need to talk with. However if you call SOPD 973-763-3000 during the business day M-F 9-4 and ask to speak w/ community realtions i am sure they could direct you.

It is run by a business on Valley Street, I believe it is one of the auto repair shops down by the Blimpie.

Joe Citizen:
As a member of the CBAC I was concerned that the Village did not cover the cost of Vests for our PD.
I posted the following question on the CBAC Discussion Board:
Below was a post on MOL.....
Is there truth to the statement that we do not provide money for vests? I note that line item #9 Page 9 Protective equipment has $2,500. Does this cover vests and if so how many?

The following was the respnse from John Gross:
True but not true. The Village regularly receives grant money for replacement vests, however there is a 50% match required. Over the years, the PD has developed a relationship with a number of businessmen who like to and do raise funds for the match(look forward to seeing him/them as Villager of the Month soon). Those funds are deposited into a Village trust fund for this purpose. If the match funds were not made available, the Village would provide the match. I recently approved a purchase order for vests which when filled (if it has not already been), all Village PD officers will have have new vests within the last 3 years.

Just so everyone knows, it is the policy of the Board of Trustees that every policeman is entitled to a working bulletproof vest. As Howard indicated above, at this point every policeman will have a vest that is not more than three years old.
