So i do not know if you knew but for well as long as i have been in south orange (a few years at this point) there has been a south orange police officer hired by pathmark to work their either everyday or almost everyday from 4:30 or so until store closing. starting in the next week or so pathmark is discontinuing this and will no longer have SOPD at the store. i am not a real big fan of that pathmark as it is however i would prefer to have a sopd officer there at night. i have never had a problem there but i dont know maybe it is from prior incidents down there that i am aware of or whatever but i feel much better when i know an SOPD officer is down there. i will be reducing my shopping there from the current little to none starting next week. that store is gross anyway. |

Maybe ten years ago there was an attempted robbery/carjacking in the parking lot. A local woman was seriously wounded and had to be evacuated by the Northstar medical evac helicopter. |

Wasn't the policeman always just INSIDE the store? I only see private security outside in the parking lot. (and presumably that will continue?) If they eliminate the inside officer -- I'm guessing they think that either theft is not a problem/or that an officer is not a deterrent. Realistically -- I doubt that the threat (in the parking lot) -- is much different than any other grocery store or mall in a suburban area. In the last few years I remember incidents at every major mall I've shopped at -- Quakerbridge, Bridgewater, Paramus, Woodbridge, Short Hills, etc. Maybe 4 years ago Bridgewater started offering valet parking after a couple of robberies/car jacking attempts in the parking lot. The SO Pathmark is not my favorite store -- but it is convenient. And its usually busy enough -- I'm always walking out when several other shoppers are, too. Pete |

Pathmark is/has hired a private security firm for the South Orange location. I believe the contract with this security firm is for Pathmarks in the tri-state area. The South Orange Pathmark will not be without security. I don't think we should malign a local business. How would we feel if Pathmark left and that site remained vacant for a looooong time? |

We'd probably feel as relieved as when the nasty Shop Rite in town was closed, if there was a hope of a NEW & clean store "coming soon". The Pathmark is as blighted as the Shop Rite was. Unfortunately, the Shop Rite in South Orange has now been vacant for almost 3 years and requires environmental remediation. Kings in Maplewood is a much safer & cleaner alternative. |

i do all my grocery shopping at pathmark and i have no complaints about it. people, pathmark is the best we can get right now that is convenient, reasonable in pricing, relatively clean and safe, easy to park, with some pleasant check-out attendants. would you like to exchange that for a vacant lot with a huge "coming soon" sign for the next ten years? no way, right? so git out there and support your local businesses until something better comes in, which will be "soon" I promise. |

"malign" a local business? excuse me but expect a clean safe grocery store is not unreasonable. Look at the towns and and cities near us and their food shopping choices? In irvington and newark there is several c towns, foodtown and 2 pathmarks i know of all of which are gross. west orange has a very nice shop rite the list goes on and i wont bore you. however the bottom line remains the same south orange/maplewood are left which two gross dirty stores (a&p and pathmark) that are only comparable with stores in irvington and newark. this upsets me that a&p and pathmark feel that these stores are ok, and they must since neither has recived any major work in from what i can deal a decent number of years while stores in morris county and even other parts of essex county are remodeled and/or expanded every 5-8 years. The police officer was hired from my understand for the parking lot and store front. while SOPD was empployed down there pathmark still employeed their own undercover secuirty for shoplifting. up until this week pathmark has not had marked security presence in addition to a police officer. (so pete get your facts straight. the officer was never for shoplifiting prevention they were for prevention of other more serious crimes) |

I have observed, over many months, probably not every time I'm at the store, but often, what looks like a marked private security vehicle at Pathmark. I've seen the guy get out and tell people to move their cars. Definately not a SOPD officer (unless he was not wearing his SOPD uniform, of course). And I only observed SOPD inside the store. I said what I observed-- just that I assumed that since they were inside the store -- it was more preventative -- and that PM must have either decided there was not enough of a problem or the officer's presence was not deterring theft. I really don't think the Pathmark is "bad" at all -- I do most of my grocery shopping there -- its just a smaller, older store. And, when I moved here about 3 years ago -- there was some sort of remodeling/spruce up going on. I recall noticing how much nicer it was after I moved here then when I stopped in before when I was house hunting (it WAS pretty grim before). Wouldn't it be smart for Pathmark to buy out the A&P (which is a dump) -- and then use the combined property to expand? Don't know about the cross-town border issues, though, if that would be feasible. Or if the store were really that great -- whether either town would be thrilled with the increased traffic ;-) [add to that the rumored Walgreens at the corner of Valley & Parker (see the other thread) -- which appears to be a total rumor!] Pete |

We do most of our shopping at Pathmark and I agree that its fine. I don't find it to be dirty, though it is an older store and not as shiny as say, whole foods. We don't buy a lot of meat there and the produce at Kings and Whole Foods is better, but also way more expensive and I've always been able to find produce at Pathmark that we fine. For everything else it the cheapest and most convinient alternative. Maybe other people have more time but as a two kid, two working parent family we don't have time to drive 15-30 mins away to go grocery shopping. (We do make a major costco run every couple of months.) |

On Saturday I spoke with the officer at Pathmark and he told me that The SOPD are no longer hired by Pathmark as of Sunday (two days ago). He said they were there seven days a week from 4 or 5 to closing. He was unsure if the store will provide additional security after they stopped working and told me to contact the store manager. I asked why or what happened and he said that it's very expensive to contract a police officer on a daily basis and believed it was a cost savings measure, but again told me to see the store manager because he wasn't completely sure. |

I just called the Pathmark and spoke with a person who identified themself as "a manager". I inquired about the removal of SOPD and was told it was a decision made beyond the stores control. They stated that they made a case for keeping the officers and wanted them to remain, however, in the end it was a decision made by Pathmark and not the local store, a trend they said that is happening at all the Pathmark stores that employed an off duty police officer. I asked about further security concerns and was told the store continues to employ plain cloths security personal, and will have contracted a uniformed security firm, for additional security within a few days. |

Grocery store parking lot crimes can happen ANYWHERE at ANYTIME, and it does, all across the USA...in some very lovely suburbs, too, I might add. Case in point: A friend's uncle was dragged out of his car in a lot in Roslyn, LI as he waited for his wife to exit the store - they dumped all 250 lbs of him on the sidewalk and took off in his vehicle.. The issue of Pathmark being down at the heals and not clean is another issue entirely, and I do personally look forward to the day that we have that 'gourmet market' actually arrive - then I can have the choice of either cheap and dirty or pretty and expensive - all in my own neightborhood! |

I've never felt unsafe at Pathmark. Best prices (overall) in the area. The problem is the painfully slow, aloof check out clerks. If you ask them a question, they either pretend they didn't hear you or grunt something unintelligably. The only way to get their attention is to keep asking the same question, make it THEIR problem, then they might bother to respond. There may be a few courteous, competent people at checkout -- I've just never drawn one. The self-checkout is a lifesaver, if you are in a position to take advantage of it. Sad that machines have become easier to deal with than people. |

ARE YOU SERIOUS...GOOD PRICES. PATHMARK IS SO OUTRAGOUSLY OVERPRICED ITS SAD...BY COMPARISON TO A&P and Kings they may be a bargain...but go to Shop Rite and the prices don't compare at all and its only 4 miles away in W.O. or six miles away in Livingston. |

Okay...so I should use the Shop Rite where???? Short Hills, Millburn, Springfield, or....? Are they the same store were all refering to cause being the VillageIdiot I can't comprehend where I should shop now... I agree that is a closer location, but I hate having to cut across Millburn during Rush hour. And honestly...MINIVAN and VOLVO moms are much more annoying and dangerous then what frequents the Pathmark. |

THere's no shoprite in Shorthills, villageidiot! I just love using your name! I hope you don't mind You can sneak thru Millburn by going straight across Millburn Ave from Wyoming, then backroads to come out on Main street below Taylor Park, take a left, take another left, and lo, you are in old people's land where you can shop without too many Suburbans clogging the way. |
