My husband is looking for jobs on dice.com and we're still rather new to the highways/biways of N NJ. I see Lyndhurst on the map, but does anyone know how one typically gets there? Is it the kind of place you can get to by NJT, or a drive...thanks! |

Thanks, Sylad. I did that part! I was just hoping someone knew first hand about ease of getting there by train... |

Cynicalgirl, Until recently, I commuted for many years to Rutherford, NJ which is right next to Lyndhurst(I made a job change and am back in the city now). It's not a bad commute, about 30 minutes without any traffic--average about an hour with. I worked off-peak hours and usually avoided the rush, but it's still doable. The big problems usually occur on Route 3 which is a horrible road, although romantic (got a big write up in the New Yorker recently). You can take the turnpike or the GSP. There is also a sneaky way to save lots of time by taking 21. I have the directions for but never tried it (I'm not an adventurous driver and I usually avoided rush hour). If your husband gets the job drop me a privateline and I'll hook you up with someone that worked up that way and knew ALL the alternative routes and had them timed down to a science. Also, you want to drive there, not take the train, unless the company has a shuttle service from the Rutherford train station or Hoboken. My company did and that's how I got to work for some years--but I was always late, despite the fact that I left with plenty of time to spare. Suttle services don't always hire people who know how to tell time and you can get left standing out in the cold (that was my pre-cell phone days). |

21 tracks up the west side of the Passaic River. You can pick it up by taking the Kearny exit off of 280, making right at (I think) 2nd light, hopping over the bridge into Newark and making a right onto McCarter Highway/21. There may be a better way, but I don't know it. |

Lyndhurst is on the Main/Bergen Line. I believe you can take the train out of Maplewood to Secaucus and then catch the Main/Bergen Line. This would have to be somewhat off-peak since I don't think trains are stopping at Secaucus during the rush hours. |

The quickest way is probably 280 to the Harrison exit to 21. You could also take the Parkway and if you didn't want to take Rt. 3, get off at the Belleville or Nutley exit. |
