Taking my kids to a concert at Carnegie Hall and want to find someplace decent but not TOO expensive to go for lunch. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

i bet they would love serendipity. it's at 225 E. 60th st. A neighborhood favorite since 1954, this fun ice-cream parlor bedecked with stained-glass lamps also dishes out excellent burgers, foot-long hot dogs, French toast, omelets, salads, and special sandwiches. However, most people come for the huge, naughty, and decadent sundaes, as well as Serendipity's most famous dessert -- frozen hot chocolate (now available in a mix you can prepare at home). As demonstrated by John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in the movie Serendipity, this is the perfect spot for a break after a sweep through nearby Bloomingdales. www.serendipity3.com. AE, DC, MC, V. Only problem with Serendipity is the wait - tried to go on a weekend last year and the wait was 1.5 hours! |

If you're willing to walk a few block west, try any of the hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants along 9th Ave anywhere from 43 street to 56th street. The food - Thai, Greek, Afghan, Vietnamese, Chinese, Peruvian, New American, etc. are all awesome. That's be best stretch of food places in Manhattan today. It's safe and the prices are very reasonable. Food is really authentic. If you want something nearby, unfortunately you're running into a lot of touristy spots (although not all are bad)... - Molyvos, a Greek place on Broadway around 55th/56th is interesting. - Patsy's on 56th btw Broadway & 8th Ave has amazing Italian (but a tad more formal... so depends on how old the kids are) - Nocello on 55th btw Broadway & 8th Ave is a more family friendly place that serves good Italian as well and is a bit cheaper - Rue 57 on SE Corner of 57th St & 6th Ave is a good French-style bistro but not super cheap (great burgers though) - Balucchi's has good Indian food and is located right next to Patsy's. Although Indian for lunch is a tad heavy and you're likely to fall asleep during the performance. But for the best balance of great food and prices, 9th Ave cannot be beat. If that distance is ok for you and your family that day, do re-post with cuisine preferences and I'll give you recommendations on specific restaurants. |

We do this all the time! When we go in for the family concert series at noon on Saturdays we have a couple of choices. If you really want to "wow" the kids take them down a few blocks to Mars 2112. You will love the looks on their faces - it's like visiting an amusment park.....just don't ask me about the food. A more typical day we stop by the Pax Deli/ Cafe just down 57th street. I can't remember which avenue but it's on the northeast corner and it is very child friendly - carry your own food to the dining room upstairs. Another choice to Trattoria del'Arte (sp?) great food, practically across the street - kids love that too. Finally - I suggest you pack light lunches in the car (or train) on the way into NYC, go to the show and then scoot down to Virgil's on 44th street. Consider it a late-lunch or early dinner and tuck into some drop-dead BBQ that the whole family loves - you'll be everyone's hero! Have fun. |
