Can anybody confirm a rumour about a new Wahlgreens going in across the street from Colombia High School - where that Electrical Supply store/luncheonette is located now?

Now that would be a train wreck of an idea. Who is the master mind that? |

Talk about traffic problems! Isn't that zoned as a neighborhood business district? Why aren't they looking at Springfield Avenue as a location? |

There is no way that store has the capacity to house a Walgreens.Or even the two stores joined together. |

This is interesting. After a recent vacation care stint at the YMCA my 7 year old told me she overheard some staff talking about plans to expand the Y and share a parking lot with a new Walgreen's. I couldn't imagine where/how and mentally wrote it off but maybe she heard it right. I've been learning that when this kid tells me something that sounds wild I should really give a listen. I think I'll recommend she pursue a career as a detective or a spy or something. Cathy |

Ohmigahd! I sincerely hope not. What could they provide that's not already available at the A&P or Pathmark, other than more traffic congestion? Z |

That intersection is already a nightmare. I can't imagine what it would be like with a major retailer there. No, no, no, no!! |

Wasn't there recent talk of possibly putting a "convenience" store in with the Shell station at that corner? What ever became of that? Z |

Why not rebuild the entire site and make it into an apt complex with retail on the lower level and residential above? |

They first need to do something about the horrendous traffic conditions at that corner. It is one of the worst in town. And, with so many students crossing that intersection (both from CHS, and "Blue Life") their safety needs to be taken into account. I'm not necessarily against the Walgreens (not necessarily for it, either); I just do not think it is a good idea with the current traffic configuration. Z |

Instead of Walgreens, we need a Thai rest at that corner. Or at any corner in Maplewood/South Orange. |

There is already a Walgreens at Irvington & Boyden less than a mile away from Columbia. -Seems unlikely that they would plunk a new one down so close to the other. |

Once again MSO residents against business. No B&Bs, no drugstores, everything should be on Springfield Ave! Get over it. Please put in 100 Walgreens or any other businesses that might reduce my taxes. "You kids today have it easy. When I was a kid everything was HUGE. My dad was nearly four times bigger than me. You couldn't even see the tops of counters.... Then gradually everything became smaller until it was the manageable size it is today." |

Dear Habanero2, One of the reasons why many of us chose to live here is the absence of intrusive businesses. We recognize that taxes have to be higher as a result, but we are willing to pay them in order to have the quality of life that we want. If you would prefer a different type of town, you should move to one. Seriously. |

I'm with Habanero2. I really don't think another retailer on a major thoroughfare is going to seriously impact anybody's quality of life. On the contrary, it might very well improve everybody's lot by adding to our ratable base and decreasing property taxes. Montagnard, I would not prefer to live in a different type of town. I want to stay in Maplewood. We chose this town, in very large part, because of its ethnic and socioeconomic diversity. But I'm very concerned that my family (and many others) will not be able to afford to live here soon if our property taxes continue to rise like they have over the past few years. Many people chose to live in Maplewood because its ethnic and socioeconomic diversity. But I fear this wonderful aspect of our town will be lost in a few years if only the extremely wealthy can afford the property taxes. To lose such an integral part of our community, IMHO, would be a severe detriment to the quality of life here, too.

To those who don't like that corner... it isn't the only way to this side of town. You can take 10 different ways to get where you are going! Avoid Columbia when shool's starting or over! I'm for a Walgreen's there, or another store to replace that electric store/lunceonette.... It's an EYESORE! |
