I'm thinking about buying tickets for a concert at PNC arts center. The tickets are pretty expensive except the lawn. How is it sitting on the lawn there. Its hard to tell how far back it is from what's online.

Not bad... bring cheap & lightweight lawn chairs.

From my most recent experience (the Peter Gabriel concert last June) the sound quality on the lawn is actually better than under cover, but even with the screens you will miss a lot of what goes on on stage. I would not buy lawn seats ahead of time, I would only do it the day of the show just in case of inclement weather. We had a really rainy night, and we had a water resistant blanket and full length rain gear, but we got soaked. We got incredibly lucky though, when we got up to dance and make the most of it, someone handed us tickets for pretty much front and center. (A few rows back in right smack in the middle of the section above the orchestra.)

From what I remember, the sound and sight line are fine, however some I know have found the crowd too distracting on the lawn - there's alot of coming and going, depending on the show.

My memory is fuzzy, but I think they didn't let us bring in our own lawn chairs. We had to check them.

So, bring blankets.

I used to get lawn seats all the time in high school and college - we'd never even think of sitting in the actual theater part. (Which might also give you a clue as to the type of people that will be sitting around you.) Typically, you can stand or come and go much more easily than you can down in the assigned seats.

The entire lawn is on an incline, so you can pretty much see from everywhere but the very back, where it begins to flatten out a bit. Back then (10 years ago), we could bring blankets and chairs. I'd heard that nowadays, you're required to use (or rent?) chairs from the arts center... but i can't confirm. Either way, i assume the closer spots still get snatched up first, so you'll want to arrive early.

And what shh said is true - attending a show on the lawn after a heavy rain can get pretty icky.
