I go along with Dave. Kam Man is so much fun to shop at. I learn something new every time I'm there. Produce and variety of foods reign supreme! Since I'm meeting my daughter for lunch Thursday in Morris Plains, I'll shop at Kam Man on the way home. |

Wegman's is the best, I grew up in upstate NY so I was spoiled when I moved here. We go to Shop Rite at the Essex Green Strip Mall for most things, Kings in Maplewood for deli stuff and a few things they don't have at Shop Rite. CostCo for major supplies of frozen meat and jumbo sized stuff that we use in large qualties. Freeman's for fish. |

I've been finding it hard to justify Whole Foods prices for fruit/veggies and have become a regular at Orange Farmers Market (not really a farmers' market but a produce store) on Main Street in Orange - take Scotland Road to Main Street, make a left onto Main, and it is about 1/4 mile on your left. They have a large selection, great prices, quick check out. The quality isn't always on par with Whole Foods, but overall, most things are quite good. For those who don't know the area, it is probably 3 miles from South Orange Ave, or about 2 miles for those of us at the northern end of South Orange. (I'm also a fan of Rossi paint store, the bargain YWCA pool & Harrar Ethiopian food in that neighborhood.) I do occassional stock-ups at Trader Joes and Costco (that place no longer frightens me - I think). |

Millburn shoprite seems to be one of the better places, good prices, close by, not overly crowded, especially on sunday mornings before noon and friendly staff. I still stop by whole foods on my way back from shoprite for most of my produce though |

Had the worst experience in Pathmark last week and when I emailed them to complain all I got was a "whoops, sorry" type reply. I doubt they took the complaint seriously. The Shoprite in Essex Green, however, is clwan, the staff is very friendly, the produce (on Sunday am at least) is fresh and the prices are reasonable. Wegman's in Woodbridge ROCKS-I go there twice a month. I haven't set foot in Pathmark or Kings in three months. There's been talk of Wegman's opening in the old Saks site in Millburn. The Short Hills NIMBYs will probably never allow it, but one can dream.......... |

I also love Wegman's. It's definitely one stop shopping. I also love the Union Pork Store for all of my pork products. Everything is fresh and home made. The prices in Kings (Maplewood) are INSANE! It's not a matter of whether one can afford to pay them or not, the question is why would one want to? If enough people stop shopping there, maybe they would realize they're off the charts. There's nothing like being on the ocean! |

How about a Wegman's in South Orange - at least SO wants a supermarket; it is known that Short Hills does not want one. |

No other votes for the Shop Rite on Morris Ave right on the Springfield/Short Hills border? I know its old and cruddy, but their fish market is wonderful and the store is old, but clean and run well, I think. I like the SR in Livingston, but sometimes its just a little too big and a little too far. I only go to Pathmark occasionally for the great music they play and the self serve check out. I buy some specialities at WF that they don't carry elsewhere- not so much the produce, but the whole grain type stuff. And Trader Joes once a month to stock up on the stuff I like from there. I've never been to the new Wegman's, but have gone tothe one out in Bridgewater. Great place, but pricey too. |

I find the Shoprite in Millburn dirty. I'd never buy anthing there that wasn't prepackaged. I honestly don't understand how stores like that one and A&P can stay open. |

Ffof: Wegmans requires enough space for a minimum of 100,000 square feet. To put in perspective, they would want a piece or property more than double the size of the NJ Transit lot and a major through street to handle the traffic. I don't think there is a location in either Maplewood or S. Orange that would come close to qualifying.

Whole Foods for meat; in fact it is the only place I would buy beef. Their beef comes from grain-fed cows, so no risk of Mad Cow Disease. Shop Rite in Millburn for produce and packaged goods. |

Shoprite in Millburn for most things Whole Foods for special occasions (sp?) A&P for quick produce runs Trader Joe's for special items if I have time (they are usually cheaper there than at Whole Foods) Kam Man for Asian ingredients, when I'm motivated, or when we're at Penang anyway. |

Another second for the Shop Rite at Essex Green in WO. The store is clean and well lit. The staff is friendly and courteous. The deli staff often give my son a slice of cheese; the butchers are helpful with special requests and orders; other staff who realize I'm there regularly often stop to say hello and smile at my son. The produce is fresh and reasonably priced. The fish is always fresh and also reasonably priced. Overall, it is worth the extra few minutes' drive. If we only need a few things and I don't have much time, I'll go to Pathmark, but the produce is second rate, the store is dirty, and the cashiers are ridiculously slow. We only shop at Kings in a pinch and if we're in town; the selection is poor and the prices are high. We buy specialty items in Whole Foods on occasion. If I had the $$ I'd shop there more. A&P is so depressing, it's not even worth writing about. |

Wish there was a Super ShopRite around here like the one on Rt 35 in Wall. Fresh baked goods, fresh sushi, pre-cooked meals, great deli, amazing selections of just about everything - the only thing they lack is good Italian bread, which, as everyone knows, can not be found south of the bridge. |

We shop at the Shop Rite at Essex Green. Occasionally we go to Whole Foods for stuff we can't buy elsewhere, like certain meats or produce. As someone mentioned earlier, I agree that Whole Foods is kind of yuppy. I don't mind it too much there, but I about screamed going to Trader Joe's in Westfield. (I just had to try the Two Buck Chuck.) I don't know what it is, but the snobbiness factor drives me insane! |

A&P is not so depressing if you're buying the cheap booze there.

Whole Foods, end of story! I found that my grocery bill actually went down after starting to shop there (used to shop at Pathmark). I think this is because I used to over-do it on the specials. Also, we bought more fruit & veg than we actually ate - it tasted horrible so it generally got thrown out. Now we eat all the fruit we buy and in fact it is hard for me to keep enough fruit in the house. Also - I'd pay ANYTHING to avoid having to shop at Pathmark. The clerks are rude & ultra-slow. I could figure an hour & a half for each time I went there, even though it is right down the road from me; WF is a 45 minute trip. That extra 45 minutes has to be worth something to me, right? My daughter doesn't remember the food I used to buy at Pathmark and doesn't miss it. She has her own "fave" brands, and they have names like Save the Forest Granola Bars and Amy's Organic Mac & Cheese. We do buy a few odd "normal" groceries (instant coffee, Progresso soup). I sometimes go to the Pathmark in Hackensack on my lunch hour ot get these things, rather than have to face the S.O. Pathmark!!! I have been buying toiletries & household cleaning supplies at Target, but I am experimenting with nontoxic homemade cleaning supplies which saves money and should eliminate about half of my trips to Target. The nontoxic homemades work better and are LOADS cheaper - enough to pay for my organic food addiction. Now as to the yuppy factor at WF: You better believe it. My favorite yuppy story involves a woman who frowned at me for using plastic bags- she had string bags. I saw her loading the string bags into her ENORMOUS SUV .... gag. Can you say h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e? Another time I saw a woman doing her grocery shopping wearing a mink coat. There seem to be two categories shopping at WF: The REALLY ultra-obnoxious yuppy types, and for-real hippies. (I don't fall into either category by a long shot - but whatever!) |
