Love the MASH, but wish they had some better food options. We've shopped at many of the stores there (though not the ultra-high end ones). The Macy's there is really one of the better ones - cannot even compare it to the one at Livingston (horrible). Bought stationery at Crane's until I realized the place here in town has it too and at a discount. Buy wedding gifts from registries at Pottery Barn/ Williams-Sonoma/ Crate & Barrel; baby gifts at the Gap/Gymboree. Christmas sweaters (on sale) at Abercrombie (for the teenager relatives), J. Crew & Anne Taylor. Maternity clothes at MOtherhood. (Pea in the pod very pricey). Special gifts at Tiffany's. Wow - we really are consumers! I do get a kick out of the very dressed up shoppers showing off, but I think there is a good mix of regular people there too. And you'll find obnoxious people whereever you go.

I have to admit that, unless I'm going out somewhere, I never wear make-up on the weekends. So, no sweats, no make-up & no blow-dry for me at MaSH. It's not just a MaSH thing; I hate sweats in public. It's just me, tho. Most people don't seem to have an issue with it. BTW- didn't know about the free sample cookies! Personal experience snob stories: 1. Three or four years ago, TS & I were attending a formal affair & went looking for clothes. We were in jeans & sweatshirts. Went all over the place (we're both small) trying to find gowns that weren't outrageous. Went into Lillian Rubin. Four saleswomen were standing there, chatting with each other. Completely ignored us as we browsed. I pointed to something on a mannequine & asked if they might have it in my size. One woman waved off in a general direction & said it might be "over there". At that point, TS & I looked at each other. I said to her, loudly, "let's try Neiman's; this is a waste of time". Two of them followed us to the door, asking if they could help. "Sorry," said TS. "You are about five minutes too late". We haven't been back since & we buy formal wear at least once a year. 2. Three years ago, desparate for something to wear to my brother's wedding (I had gained a lot of weight), I went to MaSH on a Friday evening, alone, vowing not to return until I had something for the occassion (two weeks away). I went into every store (except Lillian Rubin. Nothing was working. I even tried on dresses in Versace and Nicole Miller; price was no longer an issue, just fit. I dragged myself into Neiman's (I hate that place- I find them to be the worst of the snobs). Finally found a dress that was acceptable. Not fabulous, not even really cute. Just acceptable. And several hundred dollars. I had no help from the sole saleswoman on the floor; she was busy bringing clothes to another customer who was trying on "for fun". I decided to take the dress, since at least I would have that if nothing else showed up. I stood at the register for a full 6 minutes (I timed it) while the saleswoman farted around, chatting with the other customer, who had dressed & left the fitting room, deciding not to buy anything that day. Just as she was about to (finally) ring me up, she realized that the other "customer" had left a bag there. She stopped in the middle of my transaction & went running for the escalator (the woman had completely dissappeared). I looked at the seamstress (who had come up for something else) & told her to tell the nice saleslady that I was going elsewhere to buy a dress. Ended up at Nordtstrom's, where, as FFOF, they are always very nice & spent a boatload of money on a cock}tail outfit. |

Jeez, greenetree, that's awful. Try Syms next time. It might be worth the trip. Their company motto ("An educated consumer is our best customer") implies that you don't get a lot of help there, but I've received excellent help, especially from the tailors. Those guys refuse to sell me something I'm willing to buy if they think it doesn't fit me properly. That's what a good salesman does. That one time I went to the Mall at Short Hills a couple of months ago, I became conscious that I had inadvertently dressed up slightly, so I fit in with the crowd, and for some reason, I wished I hadn't. I go to MaSH about once every two months to have dinner with my three best friends. The mall is central to where we all live or work. We don't dress up. We wear pants, sometimes sweats, and we wear hardly any makeup. Since we are all grandmothers, we'll buy toys or kids clothes when we're there. but that's basically it. During the Christmas season we avoid the place. I was once stalked to my car by a driver who was looking for a parking place at Christmas. Creeped me out. |

Lizzie- I love the car-stalkers! They are a great way to take out my mall frustration. When I am in a good mood, I point to where I'm going. When I'm cranky, I'll walk between two rows of cars just to spread my aggravation! We've tried to eat at Joe's, but never want to put up with the wait. We usually leave the mall & go elsewhere when it's time for food. |

My kids love Johnny Rockets. And I like to browse Restoration Hardware. Look, a lot of the stores are ridiculous (ever see that bakery upstairs?), but there are many, many good places to shop: Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom's, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, The Gap, Children's Place, Chicos, Borders, Express, The Walking Shoe Store, Gymboree. Also I like to buy gifts at Paradise Pens. |

I agree shoshannah (especially the Restoration Hardware comment)! Although I don't feel the need to "dress" to shop, I've never encountered a rude clerk. I'm not a "let's go hang out in the mall" kind of person and only go there when I absolutely have to.. but the MaSH is my mall of choice when it's necessary. My husband hates shopping more than I do, but he has developed an affinity for the MaSH since the Apple Store opened its doors. |

One more thing. This is not, by any means, a crowded mall, even at holiday time. In fact I have often wondered where all the people are. I grew up on Long Island. Ever been to Roosevelt Field? I rest my case. |

I agree. I've never figured out how it has such a huge take per square foot when there never seems to be anybody there. (Except during the holidays, when it's impossible to even get into the parking lot!) |

Shoshannah, I grew up on LI too, and I totally agree. Love the Nordstrom's at MaSH. Love looking in RestHardware and buying occasionally at Crate & Barrel. Go to the mall a few times a year, never on weekends or holidays. |

For food options I love the cafe at Nordstroms - they make great salads and are very reasonable. Everything is fresh and delicious and usually not too crowded - and, since it's Nordstrom's, they are always pleasant! I love the MaSH, I love that it's not crowded. I usually just go to Nordstrom and it's so easy to get in and out. I never feel intimidated or underdressed or whatever. The color of my money, or plastic, is just as good as some perfectly coiffed moneybag. |

I managed a store at MaSH a few years back. During our Christmas Party/Trunk show we had with a few Jewelry vendors, a youngish Vietnamese man came in wearing jeans, dirty workboots and a jean jacket. He ended up buying the most expensive item sold that night. It was a $20,000 Diamond tennis bracelet. You can NEVER judge someone by what they are wearing! |

I love that mall and shop there often. I always wear jeans and a sweater/shirt. I don't think you have to dress to the 9's to fit in. Of course, I always look good! I'm sure the store owners would take your money just as quickly if you were wearing junk. |

I get insane when I'm waiting for service and there are obviously salespeople or waiters who are otherwise free. It takes all my strength not to: - Stand on the counter at the cash register and just quietly look around. - Lay down on the counter and get some shut-eye. - Put my head down on the table and get some shut-eye. - Randomly take clothes off the racks and pile them up on the counter. - Do some jumping jacks. Too passive aggressive?

Maplewoody, I agree. I am personal assistant which often means personal shopper. There is something satisfying about having a sales woman blow you off and then throwing down your AmEx and charging a $6,000 handbag. I love spending other people's money. |

One thing that works when you need a cashier is to say (loudly) "is there someone who wants to let me pay for this or is everything free?" |
