We purchased a used Jeep in June. Since June we have had a problem with the car and put approx. $1200 in trying to fix this problem. I just called the dealership, and they are going to call me back coming up with some ideas what we can do. Any suggestions on what I can ask for? |

How old is the Jeep and what is the problem? Is it a problem they should have forseen prior to selling it? |

The Jeep is a 1998. I don't think they could have forseen the problem. When it got cold outside is when the problem started. When you start the Jeep and drive it is stalling. Sort of like when someone doesn't know how to drive a stick shift. |

Have they at least diagnosed the problem? I take it they have at least attempted to, thus the $1,200. I am by no means an expert on Jeeps but I thought they had a fairly substantial warranty. I assume that they tested the fuel line for blockage and the fuel pump as well. A bucking car is one symptom of a fuel delivery problem. Does it stall dead? All the time? Does it run fine on warm days? |

Tom-- Yes I took it back tot he dealership I bought it from. Sportsnut--The things they have fixed on the Jeep have not fallen under the warranty. We purchased an extended warranty, which may be different. Honestly I am not sure about the warm days, I think it is stalling all the time now. They tested the fuel line, replaced the fuel pump. It doesn't stall dead, it just "bucks" a lot. |

If its any consolation, our VW Passat, bought new in 99, is a piece of crap . We did our homework before buying it, too. We've sunk so much $$ other than regular maintenance that it makes me sick. Just spent $660 this past weekend for the "oil cooler" when we just spent $700 6 weeks ago for a new thermostat and temperature sensor! The car has only been to VW dealers for service. This will be addressed up to the top of the VW company. Good luck with your car, I feel for you. |

blackcat, that is horrible! Hopefully something good will come out of it. Everyone keep your fingers crossed. I spoke to the manager, and he is going to look for another Jeep for me to replace this one. |

Jeep Grand Cherokee and many models of VW's (Jetta, Golf, Passat are at the bottom of their segments) have among the worst repair records of any vehicles on the road. (check the April Consumer Reports) They are very competent, nice vehicles to drive, just not highly reliable. That said, there are online bulletin boards for Jeep (quite a few for Jeeps) and VW enthusiasts (vwvortex.com) that are excellent resources for owners to understand the repair issues, fixes, etc. Often times there is more info on the boards and owners appear to be more informed than the dealers are. I'm sure you can get specific help from one of the online forums -- both on the service issue as well as dealers and independent repair options. The owners that band together there know which regional service reps to call, 800#'s, hidden warranties, etc. -- Pete |

Peteglider, thank you so much for the info. We've had other problems with various things in the past that have taken months/years to resolve, so we're getting "battle ready" for this one. I just got my Consumer Reports yesterday and saw my car listed as one of the "most unreliable" used cars. It kills me that in 99 it was rated a good car. Oh well.... |
