I have a wicker coffee table & chair set that is probably synthetic (I don't remember where I bought it, but it was cheap).

Can I waterproof it somehow & use it outside? I was thinking maybe a polyurethene spray?

ok -- i'll go for it.

if its synthetic -- does it need to be waterproofed at all?

3m used to make a water repellent spray for furniture, but had to pull it b/c it used flourocarbon propellent. perhaps there is something else like it on the market?

There's a place on Main Street in West Orange called "The Wicker Outlet". They sell both (real) wicker and synthetic wicker. They can probably advise. (973) 731-1440
