Depends how much effort they have to make and what their attitude/demeanor is in handling the job at hand. So, sometimes yes and sometimes no. I've had the experience of offering tips (usually $5) that were refused as well.

Usually R&R Towing from Map/SO shows up for AAA. I always have tipped because the guys that came to help me out were always terrific. Once, several years ago, on a night just like this, the little sports car that I had then, skidded up onto the high curb of my "driveway from Hell" and three out of four wheels were completely suspended off the driveway. In other words the underside of my car was hanging on the high curb. This was at 1:00 AM! Called AAA, the guy was here in no time. He actually had to put wooden planks under the suspended wheels to slide the car down off the curb. He was very careful because he was worried about damaging the underside, or whatever you call that part of the car. It was freezing cold and he never complained once, had a very cheerful attitude for a 1:00 AM call. I was so happy he was able to get my car freed up and I gave him a very large tip. A year or so later, my battery was dead and the same R&R guy came. He remembered my icy driveway, suspended sports car "event" and we had a few laughs. Tipped then too. If any of these AAA guys rescue me in a stressful situation, and when car trouble happens, it is always stressful, I will always tip.

Emmie -- the guyus at R&R are so nice. I have USAA Roadside Assitance and they're the ones who show up. I had never thought about tipping them nd my husband freaked when he found out I hadn't -- now I tip. They're great and they always show up FAST.

It never hurts to tip. What could go wrong from that?

Tipping for poor service would not be a good idea, Tom. It's like giving your kid candy after throwing a tantrum. It just guarantees the same poor behavior. That's why I qualified my response. I have mostly had very good experiences with the people AAA sends. But not always.

Here is how I've tipped them in the past:

Dead battery jump: $5 - $10 depending on response time

Flat tire: $10-$40 depending on weather, response time, etc.

The $40 was when they responded in minutes, in the snow, on a Friday afternoon, when I had 3 kids in the car.

Tow to garage: $5 - $10

The last two times I've tipped $5. The first was a lock-out; the man was there in about 5 minutes, and took maybe 30 seconds to get my door open. (Now that's frightening!) The second time was a flat tire. Took about 30 minutes til he arrived, but he was very fast once he got going.

Both times the guys seemed genuinely surprised and pleased at the tips, even though it wasn't much money.
