I always have mixed emotions about the holiday. My great-grandmother immigrated from Ireland, but my family never really celebrated or practiced any aspect of our Irish heritage.

I work with several folks from Ireland, and they tell me that while this is a holiday in Ireland, Americans (as we usually do) have taken it to an extreme.

I have to agree with thegoodsgt.

My husband is from Ireland, and every St. Pat's we get very nice, tasteful cards from his relatives in Ireland. (it is a national holiday there, and people often go to Mass to celebrate the saint's day - none of the green beer we have here.)

We can't reciprocate because the only cards we can find are tacky little leprechauns or cards that aren't really funny and are in some cases offensive - his family are about half teetotalers, and don't appreciate lots of jokes about drinking.

We don't really celebrate the holiday, although we are trying to raise our daughter to appreciate her Irish heritage. (and Scottish - I am half each via Canada.)

I like the parade, though. Too bad I can't get off work to go.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to one and all!

Is that green snow falling outside or has someone applied a coat of paint to the window?
