I love a good block party. If we end up there, I'll get my grill fired up. Thanks to all. |

Somebody started up with SOSA for South of Springfield Avenue last year and I thought it was a hell of a good marketing line. "SOHO, NOHO AND SOSA, perfect together"

We (in the "box") had a neighborhood assn for a few years, and a couple of block parties on Kensington, but it has sort of died out. B-(

You won't see a block party on the West Side. We find them low class. "Mel's movie is doing so well, they may make it into a book." --DAVE ROSS |

Gene Z: I think all the street work over the last few summers was harmful to the old block party. We've got our new level streets and new storm drains now, so maybe "the box" should try to make plans for an end-of-summer gathering. (That'll give Joe enough time to find his house and move in ...) |

I agree about A&P--the only danger is food poisoning. Pathmark is much better, and they play old-school R&B. |

I guess I'm low class, but that's been established since I think clothes lines are actually charming. It wasn't until I was nearly 30 that I was made aware that these are considered in some circles as tacky. I kind of wondered why ours was the only house in our "development" (boy do I hate "development" living) with one. Fortunately it never became an issue, since most of our neighbors stayed indoors 99% of the time--preferring to walk on their treadmill and watch Rikki Lake rather than go outside for a walk. The problem with the outdoors is that there's no thermostat and there are all of these strangers who might do bad things to you like wave and say hi. Well, this decidedly plebian individual looks forward to one day moving into the neighborhood. I hope folks won't be put off by a clothesline. We'll do our best to position it in a discreet location. Don't want our neighbors being forced to gaze upon our "unmentionables." (I love that expression "unmentionables" whoever coined that one must have had loads of baggage--of the psychological variety.)

I'm with you on the clothesline, Joe! There's nothing like the smell of clean laundry that's been hung outside to dry. I was really excited to discover that our house already had one all strung up and ready to go when it gets warm - I can't wait to use it. |

Joe, it's attitudes like yours that led my wife and me move to Maplewood a year ago. The layout of the town encourages interaction among neighbors. Modern developments discourage it. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

I'd be hesitant to use a clothesline. As charming as we are, I'd worry about residue from planes & other urban air gunk, since we are somewhat close on a breezy day. When we moved out of our high-rise apartment in Bayonne, we found that the carpet was discolored with very fine residue. Didn't notice it until we moved the furniture, but I always thought it was airport schmootz. One of my favorite neighbor moments is when we're out working in the garden & people stop to chat about flowers, lawn, etc. Or, when someone walks by with their dog, I always say hi to the person and the dog. The dogs always stop for pets. How freindly is that? |

I've lived in Maplewood for 40+ years in two houses - neither one encouraged use of a clothes line! Actually, I would use one mostly to air out blankets, comforters, etc. more than wash. Love that dryer fluff. Obstacles have been lack of proper tree alignments and, more importantly, very healthy birds who feast on blackberry bushes! |
