Not Neelam! Tried once, have never chosen to return. We travel a bit for Indian. Raagini on Rt. 22 in Mountainside is our favorite (once you figure out the back way to get there). Saffron on Rt. 10 in East Hanover is a potential new favorite. Begum Palace, on Rt. 124 in Madison/Florham Park(?) is another favorite, as is the Moghul(?) in Morristown. I know that there are also places in Montclair, but haven't tried (we eat Thai when in Montclair!) |

Moghul at Morristown is GREAT!!! Was there yesterday.... If you are a traveling person, go to Oaktree road in Edison. Exit 131 off GSP... Loads of Indian restaurants there... Some hard to find regional cuisine, snacks, indian chinese and fast food...If you are interested in the names, I can give you directions Happy Eating |

Begum Palace in the Staples shopping center in Madison. We only go to the buffet on Wednesdays and Saturdays -- $11.95 pp. Everything is fresh, hot, and authentic. And the owners are very attentive. |

Neelam is now under new management, and I thought there was some improvement in the food. It was not great but it wasn't bad either. So I'm curious --how recently did you eat there? |

Taj Palace in Montclair is great. Also, there is a Moghul in Edison that's fantastic. Great all you can eat lunch buffet on weekends. I wish we had better Indian without having to drive at least 20 mins.

Raagini is just a mile or so west of the Springfield/Meisel entrace, but on the Eastbound side. We get on 22W off Meisel (near Bob's and Linens n Things.) A mile or two up you'll see Raagini on the right, and then just make the next turnaround. Anyone have some back roads? |

In Parsippany, see Tourne's post above. You might have to tell them to take it easy on the spices, it was perfect for us. |

I like Neelam...the staff is always very friendly and happy to see us. Another suggestion is Jersey City, Newark Avenue and Tonnelle. There are many Indian stores and restaurants. It's great. |

Yet again, another demonstration of how mediocre food collects an audience. No self-respecting gourmand would find Neelam's or 90% of Indian restaurants satisfactory. Raagini's is one of the only area restaurants that approaches quality. |

Ok - I know what you're all going to say, but I think you'll find the best Indian in NYC on 6th Street - "Little India". I've tried Neelam and many of the places in Edison - all OK to quelch an urge for Indian right away. But when you want good Indian, maybe plan a day trip to the city for some shopping, a play, and a good Indian meal. I think the Indian here in NJ is WAY WAY overpriced for a lower quality than in NYC. For what I spend on Indian here, I can pay for toll & gas into the city, and get dinner for 4 in NYC. Just my opinion - I know the traveling isn't for everyone. |

6th Street? Not bad, but not that good either -- mediocre at best. 23rd and Lex has far better Indian, as does midtown. (Dawat, e.g, or Shaan, or Bay Leaf.) Unless you are in college, there is no excuse for settling for the poor to average at best food on 6th St. Actually Raagini is as good as most good NYC Indian restaurants. Of course, if you want real Indian food, go to Queens. |

I couldn't agree more with Cato Nova. 6th Street Indian food in NYC is quite mediocre. Curry Hill (Murray Hill) has better offerings in Manhattan. But I've had my best experiences in Edison and Queens. |

I second 23 & Lex area, we lived there for 3 years and still make trips back to Gramercy Park. Anna Purnna (sp?) is on the top of my wife's list. Just stay away from "Curry in a Hurry", it'll have you going "in a hurry" alright. "Are you better off today than you were four years ago?" – Ronald Reagan

In Jersey - Raagini is great. In NYC - I liked the Bukhara Grill: http://bukharagrill.citysearch.com/?cslink= One of the best appetizers I've ever had was this Haryali Tikka $8.00/$9.00 Boneless pieces of chicken marinated in mint, coriander, and cooked to perfection. (At least I'm fairly certain this was the one, the waiter picked it out.) |

oh, I forgot to add - the back route to Raagini. Go down Springfield Avenue in Springfield - (or is it meisel ave there?) Continue over Rt. 22 (CompUSA is right there). Go a few more lights and make a right by BG Fields into Echo Lake Park. Make a right onto Mill Lane. It'll be on the left as you reach Rt. 22. |

Today is a banner day. Someone actually posted: "I couldn't agree more with Cato Nova." I am astonished and gratified. Bukhara is great too, but they were recently cited by the Health Dept. for numerous and somewhat offputting violations, and I haven't been back since. Udjapi (I apologize if misspelled) in Montclair is also not bad. |

I think you mean Udupi Village. We liked it a lot. Better than Raagini, not as great at Chand Palace. Haven't tried the place in Madison yet. |

The NY Times NJ section yesterday had a very good review on a Kashmiri restaurant in Caldwell, Wazwan. I went there for lunch one day a number of months ago..the lights were on, tables set..but the doors were locked and noone around. Has anyone been there (to eat -- not just look in the window like I did)? The menu looked great at least. |

I have to say that I, my daughter, and my wife LOVE Saffron, on Rt. 10 towards Hanover. They have a buffet on Sundays which is very reasonable, with excellent food. A large variety of dishes, great service, very clean, and the parking is good. (Not like trying to find a spot in Montclair...) |

A year ago, my wife wanted to take me to Mogul in Edison, and it was fully. We cruised along Oak Tree Rd in search of another place. This is the strip called Little Bombay that spans part of Edison and part of Iselin. (And Iselin is just a part of Woodbridge.) We stumbled into a little hole in the wall called Chowpatty, totally unfancy, unlike Mogul. It was vegetarian, and looked only slightly more upscale than a luncheonette. The staff there seemed touched that white people would venture in. The food was unusual and supremely tasty. My wife has a restricted diet and had little trouble finding suitable choices. The desserts were amazing, relying heavily on nuts. The cuisine was from a pair of adjacent Indian states, and I'm sorry, but I don't remember which two. They are not normally represented in Indian restaurants here. Now that I've just written that, I think we should go back some time. For "normal" Indian food of the type that you would get here in the US, I agree Mogul is good, and they have a place in Morristown. |
