Gotta love it. Their service is terrible, they mix recyclables with the regular trash and we get only 2 bulk pick-ups a year. Now the garbage bill I received today went up 8%. Clearly, the price we pay and the service we get are inversely related. Hell, other towns not only have this built into their taxes, they have a bulk pick-up once a month.

Not South Orange - our bulk pick up days are long gone. We can, however, take advantage of "container days" when we can take the stuff we used to put on the curb to the dump - there's a few of them a year.

First one for 2004 is Saturday, April 24 - you can take things to the Department of Public Works Yard at 300 Walton Avenue (the place for recycled items). 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You'll need two forms of ID. The Gaslight newsletter has a list of permitted and not permitted items. Future dates will also be in the next issue.

cmonty and SoOrLady: You can also call Public Works and schedule a pick-up of larger items (furniture,etc.). I think you have to schedule one-month in advance and the limit is either 2 or 4 items. Call 973-378-7741 for info.

Sullymw: The county has one or two hazardous waste dumping days a year--usually announced in the News Record, and also on the County website. The dumpsite is in Verona, I think, or near there.

nj: Landfill costs have increased dramatically this year. I run a commercial building in NYC, and our landfill dumping costs have increased to $72/ton for "mixed" garbage (comparable to household waste). Just a few years back the cost was $50/ton. The new low-cost haulers are actually shipping garbage to landfills in China--the cost in the US is so high that it is cheaper to ship our waste overseas.

sullyw:

If it is a water base paint, just let the water evaporate and throw away the empty cans.

Oil base paint should be taken to the county collection point on hazardous waste days as mfpark suggests. A advertisement for hazardous waste disposal usually runs in the N-R a short time before the actual date.

sullymw,

Paint. Stack a few cardboard boxes into a nest then pour the paint into and all over the sides of the boxes. Let it dry. Leave the empty cans open and let the dry.

Then toss all into the trash.

The cost for household trash per ton in Essex County is $78. Trash that goes to the landfill is $72 per ton.

This is an increase from last year and that is why WM's bill has increased.

Essex County will be holding 2 Hazardous Waste collection days this year. This is according to an article in the News Record a few weeks back.

Just got my bill! Another increase, what a shock. Just another example of a monopoly at work. If Waste Management had to actually worry about competition I don't think my bill would have gone up 8%.

This is why, if they leave a single bit of garbage, I call and make them come back and get it. I'm paying for it, so I want it done right.

They used to only half-empty the cans. After two years of a supervisor coming out the next day & getting the remainder, they finally started emptying the whole can.

Once I called and told them I would be paying the same proportion of the bill that got emptied from my cans.
