While watching a show on Animal Planet last night my husband and I were reminded of a movie from the '80's or '90's. Neither of us can remember it's name!

It was about aborigines in the outback and a Coke bottle falls from the sky and turns thier world upside down. Was it called "The Sky is Falling" or something to do with the heavens?

Help me and then I'll see if Netflix has it to rent. I seem to remember that it would be fine for children to watch.

If we’re talking about the same movie…. Was there a father and son aborigines pair walking through the outback through out the movie?

Gods must be crazy.

I think in "The Gods Must Be Crazy", they were in southern Africa, not the Australian outback.

Yes, it was Africa.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080801/

It was a big hit in Japan. The African star visited Japan and didn't care for his stardom and went back to his modest life in Africa. I heard this recently on NPR.

It was Africa, and they were pygmies.

Actually they were Kalahari bushmen. Check http://www.africaguide.com/culture/tribes/index.htm for the difference.

His name was N!xau.

Since the Kalahari desert is in southern Africa, it's likely that the caucasian actors were South African.

I saw this movie.
Except they weren't Kalahari bushmen, they were predominently white.
And it wasn't a Coke bottle, it was a shark.
And it was set in Long Island.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

The Oracle used to tell me about those crazy gods and their hijinx. That Coke bottle incident was only one of dozens of stupid things the gods were responsible for...

Thread drift idea: I'll bet you guys can identify PLENTY of examples of the gods playing dumb tricks on mankind.

The sequel wasn't nearly as good as the original.

The original was a racist South African screed, whose basic viewpoint was that the Kalahari (the term "Bushmen" is considered racist") were akin to Rousseau's noble savage, who were tainted by the incursion into their life of artifacts from the "civilized" world. Luckily, the protagonist was able to return the talisman of the "gods" (white people). The basic message was that we civilized white people were crazy because we lived such stressful lives in the big city, while these savage negroes who lived close to nature had it right all along. Disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself for remembering it fondly.

The truth is usually in the middle, and to see that, you have to see the edges. No one would recommend living the lives of the Kalahari, but it pays to examine the downsides of modern society. You can choose to make changes, big or small, but increased consciousness is rarely a bad thing.

Blah blah blah. What mealy-mouthed nonsense. The truth is rarely in the middle; instead, blurry-eyed fools fail to distinguish truth's sharp edge, and fail to take responsibility for their failure of vision.

This film contrasts the lives of two very different sub-cultures living within a very short span of time and distance within the boundaries of the Union of South Africa. Weaknesses of both cultures are explored. The film is not especially optimistic about the present and future of either the big city or the nomadic culture.
