Projected enrollment increase is 0.3% according to numbers provided on SOMSD website. I would have to agree with Mellie that enrollment is basically flat.

Health benefit costs, according to SOMSD's own analysis, could have been lower by switching to another program but they chose not to switch.

Dave:

For a statement of mine to which Copperfield took exception I was accused of "twisting facts," then being "disingenuous," and "spewing" by someone who appears to want a rhetorical fight. Now you're telling me I can't call him on being an unnecessarily hostile jerk?

Then there's this from Redsox (February 7, 2004 - 1:58 pm), which I don't see why you would tolerate while scolding me:

"Horrorshaq is a pompous *sshole ."

I don't mean to drive you crazy splitting hairs and I realize you can't read everything, but from where I sit the distinctions are getting a bit fine.

Agreed. I tend to react when summoned and often don't have time to read through an entire thread.

Thanks. I appreciate your evenhandedness.

buch - enrollment is up about 21 pupils on 6000 total enrolled = 0.3%. What drives the other 8.7% of increase, especially since the pay rise went through in 2003.

I know what went up Burch - I want to know why it went up.

The ppt thingy was sadly lacking in any kind of content that would have told me that.

Prediction: the H will propose dumping athletics before trimming anything else.
Meanwhile, H refuses to consent to evaluate any programs at all.
No measurements for success, failure, cost-effectiveness will be permitted unless the Board orders him to do so.
So far, the board as presently composed, and led by the Lattites, will not take command.
The next election is important.

Not sure how "jerk" is the rhetorical equivalent of "disingenuous" but since I've learned I'm also a Reaganite (??) I'll take my lead from Uncle Ronnie and let it roll off of me like Teflon ;)

jfburch -still awaiting a response to a reasonable question.

DWM says of course and it’s public knowledge that you picked up an application packet, but I wouldn’t want to assume anything.

So, as a point of information I ask again:

Will you be running for BOE in the upcoming election ? And, if so, perhaps we can have your full name please.

Copperfield, welcome to MOL.....

Mellie--some of this is covered in the Budget 101 stuff, though admittedly it's a lot to wade through

-healthcare costs are going up annually 10%-15%+
-the SOMEA contract provides for annual increases, not just in 2003
-utilities, fuel (part of transportation costs) etc. are generally increasing

This is completely unscientific, but from casual observation it appears that the best indication of whether someone is running for office is whether he or she actually submits the dang petition.

Until then, all is speculation. I wouldn't draw any conclusions about anything until then.

"Maplewood will cease being a "deal" relative to other NY-commutable suburbs if the taxes are considered comparably high or the reputation of the schools is too low. The trend toward gentrification will slow, and we'll still have two Title One schools."

To me, this is exactly what is going on, or is beginning to. A lot of us in the stressed end of things are feeling that the equation isn't working. And we're not readily able to either move, or afford private school. I now know of 8 relatively new to Maplewood families, with school age children, are feeling a little had and a little stuck for these reasons... Seems like some of those better off seem to move or do private school.

"Seems like some of those better off seem to move or do private school."

This is one of my pet peeves here. In a word, the answer to your speculation is, "No".

Don't be mislead by the superficial measures that "some" may use. There's a world of good here in our schools, and our family has been well-served by them.

michael: jf's response is like the superintendent's to any question about the budget, academics, and accountability.
guess she's running under cover, for now.

OK Julie Burch,here's the answer:

I don't get paid to figure out how to manage the District. Peter Horoschak does (and quite handsomely at that . . . $150,000+ per year.) Unfortunately, there's very little in the way of tangible, objectively demonstrable results to show for his years of stewardship.

So you should take Fringe up on his offer . . . pay him the Boss's salary and I'm reasonably certain that in short order he and Rene Pollock, and Jim Corino, and Hannah Edelman and a few others could figure it out. It wouldn't be easy, but you know, Necessity is the Mother of Invention. Peter's got a major attitude problem . . . mainly that he doesn't want to figure it out. Well, he'd better get ready for an attitude adjustment.

Imaginative, maybe.

But not "inconceivable".

JLN for the Bd of Education.

At least we would hear substance on issues.

We do need new blood, creative board members who care about the community and students, and not just about special educational interests.
