I have a 250 sq ft. bedroom which needs floor refinishing. Can anyone recommend someone and approximately how much does this cost? |

Kristoffersen Floors based in Livingston. They do an excellent job, though I can't guess the cost. |

Distinctive Flooring in Bergen or Morris County -- did our entire house last summer. I would guess about $3 per sq/ft. |

MOL's favorite floor refinisher is Claudio Russo. I used him and was very satisfied. 973-481-6372 973-418-2417

Tom--we have one room, about 18x14, to do. Any idea what he would charge? |

He charges by the square foot. I don't remember the rate, but this ends up being a good deal for you. I think his rates are comparable to the other folks' rates. His workmanship and attitude are the best. He also completes his work on time. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

I had my floors done about 7 years ago. Depending on what type of finish they use and how many coats are applied will determine the cost per Sq. foot. We had an oil base polyurathane put down 3 coats. Make sure they sand between the first and second coats. Water base is a cheaper... not by much.... quicker drying(less smelly) application, but in doing the research I felt that it would not stand up to kids and a dog as well as the oil base. I beleive we paid in the $1.50 - $1.85 per Sq ft range. I can't beleive prices have doubled in 7 years but maybe? |

Claudio charges the same price for oil or water-based polyeurethane even though he has to put on more coats of the water to get to the same coverage you get with oil. He also does a light sanding between coats. I don't have my invoices here at work so I can't quote a price per sq. ft, but his costs were competitive with the three other quotes I got and as Tom mentioned, you won't find a better attitude than Claudio's

Well, based on the recommendations here, I just hired Russo Flooring to do my refinishing. I hope MOL ends up being a good place to get references. Anyone out there want to reassure this very nervous nelly? Oh, and his name is Claudio Diniz. "Russo" is the nickname his father gave him, or so he just told me, hehe. |

Hey, what can I say? I already said he did a great job and displayed a great attitude. I expect he will for you, too. Note also that ever since I've been on MOL, people only say good things about this guy, never a bad thing. He is clearly the top rated floor refinisher on MOL. OK, is that reassuring? |

Another vote of confidence for Claudio over here. We had him refinish our entire downstairs last year, including ripping up and relaying our dining room floor, that had... pet issues stemming from the previous owner. We were skeptical at first because Claudio is so young, but he was nothing but accommodating, professional, and thorough. We plan to have him back once we're ready to tackle the upstairs. I wish i could give such high praise to even half the other contractors we've hired. |

Nothing but praise for Claudio and Russo flooring. Came on time, finished when said and very neat and professional. Priced accordingly in line with others' we've gotten quotes from. Did such a great job on the whole house that we had him back to do our stairs in the front hall. |

I believe I read that water based poly is actually harder than solvent based material. It also has the advantage that it dries quickly, minimizing dust settling on the surface and allowing multiple coats to be done in one day. I believe, however, that solvent based poly brings out the color of the floor much better than water based. |

Well, now that the job is finished, I'd give Russo Flooring a C- for sanding, a B+ for applying finish, an A- for neatness, and a C for timeliness. The whole floor reveals visible ripples from the sander. I suppose if they had more experience they'd be able to use it with a more feathery touch. As it stands, the floor does not look flat but rippled. This pretty much ruins the look. He said and wrote on the estimate that he'd do one coat of sealer and 3 coats of water-borne finish. When I was presented with the finished product, I was told that I'd gotten 1 coat of sealer and 2 coats of finish. It didn't look very good at all. In fact, I was very disappointed between the finish and the ripples. So I asked him to do what he'd said he'd do and apply the third coat, which he did without complaint after I showed him the estimate. It looked much better after that. In fact, it looked so much better that I almost wish I'd insisted on a fourth coat, but his lateness had inconvenienced my family enough at that point that I really didn't have it in me to endure more days of living with all our dining room and living room furniture piled high in our family room. He was supposed to have finished before we returned from vacation and I was VERY clear about that being a part of the deal. But it didn't work out that way. His estimate was actually the highest of the several I got, including ones from Expert Floors, Salem Floors, Go WIth the Grain, and Bryant, so I also don't feel like I "got what I paid for." In the end, I have a feeling I probably would have gotten a much better job from Salem, and I would have gone with them but they were not available. So, my floors look better, but they don't look great. The positives are that they didn't knick my moldings hardly at all, the dust doesn't seem to be too out of control, and finish was not slopped onto my moldings. But also, it doesn't seem like the floor was really finished up to the molding so as to prevent these things from happening. But it's really hard for me to tell if that's right or not. So there you have it--that was my experience. I don't feel totally ripped off or angry or anything, I just don't feel like my floors look great. |

We used European Flooring after hearing rave reviews from a friend, and could not be happier. Our floors look spectacular. They removed carpet in three bedrooms, sanded the floors and stained them. Total cost was $1300; without the staining, would have been about $200 less. And without removing the carpet and pad, would have been about $175 less than that. The color came out perfect. Their # is 973-746-6615.

We just used Claudio's Russo Flooring to refinish three bedrooms, a dining room, a living room and sunroom, about 1050sq ft total, plus stairs. I think he did a great job. We weren't on a tight schedule and didn't have to worry about the poly not drying quickly due to the humidity in the air, so it took longer than expected, but still within a week. He charged us about $2.50 a sq ft. Our floors were in pretty good shape, no repairs were needed, just some putty in a few spots. I agree that he has a great attitude and was very helpful and accomodating, although sometimes it's hard to reach him by phone (but he always called me back). I would recommend him without hesistation. |
