Hi, I'm a 14 y/o high school student looking for summer job. I'm responsible and hard-working. I can do housekeeping chores, run errands, etc. If you are interested give me a call at 973-761-8452 and ask for patrick or email me at infamousp122@aol.com |

I wanted to commend Patrick for being responsible and hardworking and being smart enough to use MOL to network for a job. Unfortunately, MAYplewood CONsulting is not hiring at this time. In any case I have my own teenager that is trying to find a summer job and has had limited success, mostly doing babysitting. |

you may want to start by choosing a screen name that doesn't contain the word "infamous." have you looked that word up in the dictionary? the first definition is: Having an exceedingly bad reputation; notorious. i know i would think twice about hiring someone i didn't know if he identified himself as "infamous," even if he was just kidding. you may think this sounds like nit-picking, but you'll find that people who don't know you will rely very heavily on their first impressions. if you are responsible and hard-working, you want to give yourself an opportunity to prove that to people. by describing yourself as "infamous," you may be turning possible employers off before you even get the chance. |

My guess is that JFW is the posters initials, a screen name that pretty much won't offend anyone, while using the phrase WTF is guaranteed to offend just about everyone.

it seems to be a teenage thing, posting with these "notorious" names. We're not original Maplewoodians: where we're from,my teenage daughter & her friends had some wicked screen names and I'm not talking obnoxious, but downright...well, you get the picture - until I pointed out that these "just for fun" screen names would send the wrong message/invite a real predator and to "CANCEL IT AND I MEAN NOW" To be a parent today means more than jst having, "eyes in the back of your head" as my mother would say -you need antennae, global positioning unit, and radar detection as well. |

Patrick: I have a help wanted ad listed under MOL "please help..." thread "Moms/Dads: would you recommend..." It details 1st job in particular, if you feel you can do it properly ( the deck is small, but needs a really good scrubbing) the rest is just messy, please call me/ do not e-mail - I'm too new at this computer stuff - and leave a message on my machine - hoping to get this done ASAP.... We're in Maplewood 973- 761-1796. P.S. Very smart move to use computer. |

The Library always takes applications for page positions from students 14 years or older. We have no openings now (summer is kind of slow) but we welcome the kids to come in and fill out an application which we do keep on file and refer to when openings occur. NCJ aka LL |

I'm a parent of enough wired kids to have lived with what seem to me to be reasonably odd or unusual screen names, but (as Librarylady mentioned before), responding to Jfw's post with "WTF" pretty much pushed a prospective hire off my radar screen. |

I dunno. WTF was definitely rude, but Patrick aka infamous was posting for job leads, not unsolicited advice about his username. Sure, it's not the most grown-up or professional sounding, but infamous is 14. If the user name (or hair or dress style or whatever) bugs you enough, don't hire him--or, if it is somehow job relevant, give the feedback. He'll probably figure it out eventually. When I used to help dole out usernames at a university, all the cute freshlings liked names like "sexylove" and "babeilicious" despite suggestions to go more neutral. They'd come running back soon as they had to send out resumes. Anyway, I have lots of odd jobs and not enough spare cash, but I'll keep you in mind Patrick. |

J, As I wrote above, (most) user names don't have an impact on me. As a name, Infamousp seems innocuous enough and I would not make judgements based on it. What does concern me is the "WTF". If I found one of my two older (online) children posting that way, I'd have a pretty strong negative reaction. In this environment, it's enough for me to say pass on hiring someone. That strikes me as useful feedback, which is why I added it. You and I (among others) post under our own names, take responsibility for what we say and accept consequences for its effect. If Patrick came back here and acknowledged that, I'd change my mind. |

wow, i go away for a few days and look what happens. can always count on this board to make a mountain out of a mole-hill. i don't need to say much more to you, patrick. your comment (and choice of phrasing) tells the readers all they need to know about you. however, i'm stunned that anyone is still considering hiring him ... anyone who hires this little snot deserves what he/she gets. |

Specifics aside, I can't agree with that philosophy. It takes a village--especially with adolescents. You can try to banish all the "little snots" from your presence (and I guarantee the end results won't really be what you wanted) or you can help them learn how the village works and bring them into the community when and where the opportunity presents.

Jfw You were wrong to attack Patrick because his user name includes "infamous" and he said "wtf". His screen name is his business, and I did not give it a second thought. "wtf" could mean several things and even if it did contain an expletive, so what. I give him credit for looking for a summer job. He might well be responsible and hard-working and willing to work. Your comments and phrasing tell me something about you. It is to Patrick's credit that he did not engage in name calling. I hope Patrick will let us know if he got a job. And I would not be surprised if his employer is quite satisfied. |

edmay, please re-read my original suggestion to patrick and tell me how that constitutes an "attack." i was simply offering constructive advice. i think most readers agree that the fact that he chose to respond as he did tells you something about his character. at no point did i imply that he was not "responsible and hard-working"; he may well be. but he does have a bit of an attitude. if you and jfburch are willing to look the other way, that's your call, but my expectations of prospective employees are higher than that. |

Look, constructive or not, it was unsolicited and that can be annoying and is often taken as bad manners. I've seen plenty of adults huff or take offense in similar situations (i.e. I post in Please Help looking for an acupuncturist and someone jumps in to tell me what's wrong with acupuncture--if I wanted to debate it I'd post in Soapbox, I just want an acupuncturist.) So, however well meant your comments were, it didn't surprise me that he was annoyed. No he didn't express his annoyance well. But he's also not that familiar with this board (and maybe this kind of on-line context in general) since he spammed a bit with his post in several threads--I only looked here since it had gotten some responses and piqued my curiosity--and he may not have a sense of his audience or the effect of on-line speech. Whether he would speak similarly in person to an unknown adult is not clear. I don't find it enough to judge him on; you disagree, but whatever, he didn't just mouth off out of the blue and which of the two of you has a shorter fuse is debatable. (I think this horse is damn near dead.) |

ummm this is patrick...i'm sorry for being rude but i was jus a little aggravated that jfw was attacking my s/n and using this thread for defining the word infamous...i couldn't come up with an "adult" sounding screenname so i used my old aol s/n...what kinda s/n would u had picked if u were 14? and o yea please stop using this thread if all u r goin to do is critize my s.n and what i said earlier.....i'm looking for a job...not people who read the dictionary |
