I had a question about Baird Community Center, but in the same vein, any history about Montrose Elementary would be appreciated. It is a beautiful-looking school, now way past its hey-day.

The people I know in town whose children went to Montrose School all say it was the best ever. I suspect that its small size had a lot to do with that.

For a short period of time my son's Y-preschool was housed on the first floor of that building. The classrooms were enormous compared to modern standards. They had high ceilings, a wall of oak trimmed windows, five panel oak doors, and old schoolhouse lights.

If they ever plan a major renovation (and destroy its character) I plan to be first in line, in an attempt to get as much oak moldings and trim as possible.

From what I understand this is one of a number of schools that were closed sometime in the 1970's because of declining enrollment. One other, I know of, is the building that houses KIDSDOC and the South Mountain Fitness Center.

Montrose, Fielding (now the administration building) and Newstead (now South Mountain Annex) were closed around 1980 due to declining enrollments. I think that First Street School (South Mtn Fitness et al.) was closed a few years before that. They very nearly closed Seth Boyden in 1980 due to low enrollment (one Kindergarten class of 17 kids at that time).

Thank you for the info...it is a beautiful building and I wasn't sure if it was still being used for K-5 or K-6. Schools that look like Montrose are a dying breed.

Montrose is currently being used for the Alternative High School program.
