A friend of mine was walking home from the train station last night around 9:30, and was mugged at the corner of 2nd Street & Academy, just a few blocks from his home. He was not carrying his wallet at the time and only had a few dollars, but the individual also took his watch, and of course my friend is very upset to have been threatened and victimized in this manner so close to his home. My friend has given the details to the S.O.P.D., all I know from him is that the perpetrator was a male who was wearing a ski mask and had a gun. I know that crime is not totally absent from our streets, but I am horrified that such a thing can happen at a spot that I walk by regularly, where neighbors say hello to each other, and at such a relatively early time of the evening! I felt that I would be remiss if I didn't let my neighbors know that this happened, so that they can be on their guard. |

That is shocking, as I walk that route daily as well. I hope that the police get on the case, and perhaps consider regular patrols of surrounding streets keyed to the times that the trains come in, as I expect that the perp was waiting for a NYC commuter to victimize. |

I walked home last night as well @ 10:30 pm. And there were some kids hanging out on the Petco steps smoking and listening to music. 4th street also has some problems. I have seen abandoned cars in the lot across from Allegiance Bank, grafitti on the Bank, and I have witnessed a lot of "hanging out" at that intersection and in the church lot by young males, single and in groups. 2nd is not well lighted and neither is Academy (actually not many places are in SO.) Contact the police. A police officer's family lives at 2nd and Academy. The police cheif, Tom Andrew, lives at Academy and 5th. |

On Monday, one of our neighbors distributed a flyer on and around College Place that indicated cars and garages were being targeted, as well (thanks, Kevin!) With that in mind, last night around midnight I heard six or seven people talking in a small group just outside my house. You might recall my last quality-of-life encounter with a horn-crazed driver and a pitbull on the way to the fireworks in South Orange (I know I do), so it was with some caution I walked out front to politely ask why they were all there. Now, College Place is dark (though not as dark as when it loses power, which PSE&G recently acknowledged it does more than any other street in northern New Jersey), so I was just about upon them before I realized they were all college students smoking dope using one of the many devices made for such an event (this is not my known area of expertise). I explained that we have kids who sleep with the bedroom windows open, it was late and asked if they could keep that in mind. They readily agreed and moved along. No manic dogs were seen. On reflection, though, I'm wondering if I was too tolerant of a group of people essentially getting high on my front lawn at midnight. In the pantheon of quality of life incursions, muggings first, car break-ins second and stoned college kids third, but does this all become part of a pattern that undermines what we love about living here? This post isn't intended to incite; I'm really not sure if I should have done anything differently. |

Brian, I think a call to the SO police would've been in order. They could have driven through the area "by chance" and confronted the kids. |

For what it's worth, I have since gotten a few more details from my friend. He was assailed by two African American males (not 1), both rather young -- he thinks age 20 or younger. Brian, I'm with thegoodsgt, I think a call to the police would be a proper response. Regardless of what they're doing, it's totally unacceptable for a group of people to wander over and hang out in your yard. |

I wonder if it is coincidence that this “crime-spree” is happening right when schools reopen and that the perpetrators appear to be college age? |

I don't know that I would call it a "spree" and I expect, or at least hope that college kids would have other more pressing concerns. Under employed teens would be more likely. |
