Brian- you could barely handle the pedicure thread. I don't know that you want to read further.

Anyway, ladies - remember the 'Bra Ladies'? The ones at the department stores? Did your mother take you there at the dawn of puberty for a fitting? They'd poke, squeeze and adjust while you stood there dying of embarassment. And they always had grey hair & were about 4'6" tall.

So, in need of an engineering miracle for my 40 y.o. losing-to-gravity bustline so I can wear spaghetti straps on Saturday night, I went to Helene Hirsch.

Oy! I walked in & there are two (TWO!)back rooms. The very backest is where the miracles take place. The Bra Lady who waited on me was indeed still short, but not as old as I remember (go figure). She took one look at me & pronounced my size. And then told me that I was wearing the wrong size. Hell, I figured if they got in the cups, it fit!

Anyway, girlfriend was right on about the size. And they don't poke, prod & smoosh when you are my age, I guess. They just point & direct you on how to adjust. I walked out with a new truss wardrobe.

God bless the bra ladies! Have you been to one lately, or have you just been hitting the Lord & Taylor lingerie sales for the past several years, like me?

You know those tank things, that anyone with boobs looks at and says "what the hell would this do?" Well, that's it for me, at least for the next 6-10 months while I'm still breastfeeding. Maybe after that I'll take my by-then nonexistent breasts to Helen Hirsch to hear someone proclaim "32 A." (I will of course drown out the sound of the other A.) Do they make training bras with extra cushion???

I started out as a AA bra cup BEFORE nursing 3 kids for 15 months each! I begged to visit the bra lady as a kid but there was no need.......

My newest wardrobe of undergarments are lycra tank tops cut off short like a swim suit top. For special nights out I whip out my new fake boobs! They are silicone insert thingys. I have so much fun putting on a "real" bra with cups and filling them up with jiggly silicone - my three little daughters think it is hysterical. The 2 year old was cought running around the house clutching one artificial breast the other day - seems she remembers nursing a bit too well.

BTW: The bra ladies in Dallas were exactly as you described.

Don't forget the tape measure around the neck; no self respecting bra lady would be without one.

WNYC recently ran a series (Jan 19) on disappearing occupations called "The Next Big Thing." One of the interviews was with.....

Selma Koch, Bra Saleswoman

94-year old Selma Koch runs the Town Shop, one of New York's last old-style bra fitting shop. The Town Shop is a fourth-generation family business that emphasizes personal service and custom fitting. Selma still works every day alongside her son and grandson. Their motto: "We know your size."

The whole interview (and transcript too) is available here (click at the bottom--"Happy Birthday Selma"--New York Works Series):

Oh my goodness - I went to a bra lady (& HER MALE COUNTERPARTS!) on Orchard Street or Ludlow or something several years ago to get a bra to go with my wedding dress...I just got in & out of the store as quickly as possible, mission accomplished. The bra they sold me was an engineering miracle!

I know of someone who joked that her engineering miracle required an entire dresser drawer for itself.

How do you go about becoming a male bra lady? Does the Adult School offer a class?

I think I would really enjoy this as a second career and would find the work fascinating.

I think they'd make you start as the male training bra lady, wouldn't they? The ones with the little wheels on the back, right?

I think a "For Women Only" thread starts a bad trend. Next there will be "For Men Only", where men discuss, well, you know what we'll discuss. Then there'll be "Angry White Men Only", then we're going to hell in a hand basket. This will be followed by "West Siders Only" and "East Siders Only". No, this is not good.

We are the world . . .

Chris - I do apologize. Dave, can you change the name of this thread to 'For anyone who has boobs in need of support' ?

Thanks

Can I say boobs?

BTW - Gerry, 'training bra' is a misnomer. They go where they want. Can't train 'em to do a darned thing.

You ladies don't know how easy you had it. You atleast had someone to show you how to put the bras on. There was no bra man who showed us how to take them off, we had to figure this one out by ourselves. Us younger guys went through hell when they came out with ones that hooked in the front.

Am I right guys?

After 2 babies, I finally threw away my horrible maternity/ nursing bras - walked in to Victoria Secret, opened a credit card account and haven't looked back. It is a great feeling having nice underwear again !!! By the way, I like the 1 hand approach to get the bra off ....although it is quite a while ago: now I have pj's on after 7 pm !!
