When I was in Arizona last week, I simply had to visit the local Stonecold Creamery in Scottsdale. Although I really don't like ice cream (yeah right) I felt it was my civic duty to go in and order the largest cone that they offered. When I explained the purpose of my fact finding mission to the counterperson, he offered me a taste of each of the flavors. I don't remember pistascio or butterscotch, but the German Choc Combo was to die for. Can't wait till they open (for further research only, of course ) NCJ aka LL

OK, let's review. If the new place is to thrive, it'd be good if: *They make a superior product in an assortment of traditional and innovative flavors, offering exciting and nutritious mix-ins, novel, wholesome fountain items, and maybe even great candy or (Dreesen's? Krispy-Creme?) donuts... *CHS (or other local SOMA high-school) is invited to join in a permanent partnership with the new emporium, offering qualifying students part-time positions, 12 months every year... *The prices aren't through the roof... *Staff busts its collective ass to please the customer and keep the place spotless... *We have a nice hot summer, delightfully mild fall, and the stock market improves... *The place eventually does open. THEN: *They should change the name to Gruning's. |

I'd like to protest in the strongest terms possible against this so-called "ice creamery". Have we lost all respect? Do we need this abuse? Who ever heard of an ice cream establishment refusing to vend pistachio? Carvell sells it for crying out loud. Now that I'm done flying sorties over Baghdad, I'm going to picket this place the day it opens. Heck, if I don't use up this MOAB I may drop it on them in the wee hours of the night, completely ruining their new countertop and refrigeration unit.. Who's with me? Sbenois? Arturo? BobbestK? Harpo? MRosner? Paul Surovell is putting together a petition and I hope every one signs it. Especially my patients (if they want to continue getting their prescriptions, and they know what I mean). No Pistachio No Peace. No Pistachio No Peace. No Pistachio No Peace. dr stefano |

Stefano, check out this link - http://www.coldstonecreamery.com/core/flavor.asp I think the flavor is so popular that they must have run out the day Nancy did her Arizona tast testing venture. |

Stefano, chill (said by someone named CHiller..hahaha) Just cause I don't remember pistaschio doesn't mean it isn't available. I don't remember much of the '60's either, but from what I read, it was a very very COOL time. Nancy CHILLER Janow NCJ aka LL

This ice cream obsession reminds me of one-hour waits outside an ice-cream shack (truly) in Somerville, Massachusetts. It's amazing what being in college does for your willingness to wait in line. |

Brian: For the record, Frozen Granite is a highly popular and (I'm told) extremely tasty item, but not an invention of Cold Stone Creamery. At least one fine old St. Louis area ice cream institution of my personal acquaintance, the revered Ted Drewes Ice Cream establishment, has been packing (little ice cream tech-talk for ya there) the stuff for more than twenty years, and I'm not even sure they were the first. The term "Frozen Granite" refers to the look (not the flavor) of it, as opposed to being, let's say, simply a goofy name made up to be cute and surprising, like "Liver&Onions", an original flavor sold by the Stony Hill folks which looked and tasted nothing at all like the dinner entree. BTW, does Dr. Stefano realize that while up there sortieing in his stealth aircraft, he may have inadvertantly (with all due respect to our GPS-guided munitions) been destroying some of the very trees which are the source of his favorite flavor? Yup. Just what part of the world do you think produces the majority of high-quality pistachio nuts, Ace? You may find that you are hoisted by your own pistachio, Stefano! |

lol.. thanks, I think. I was actually intrigued by the Cold Stone description on their web site: "We'll mix your custom creation on a frozen granite stone, and heap it all into one of our famous waffle cones or waffle bowls." Okay, I'm a fan of misplaced modifiers. |

Dearest Soda, I have it on the bestest authority that Pistascio ice cream is composed mostly of hazelnuts. I will be sending inspector Nancy to the establishment on day one and I expect them to give her complete and unfettered access to their flavors. dr stefano |

My wife and I used to love going to Thomas Sweet's (in both Princeton and New Brunswick) when we lived down there. Here's some good news. We just happened to have gone to a Cold Stone Creamery on a vacation in California and it was quite excellent. Strange to see the employees mashing up the ice cream and cookies, etc., on the stone counter (vs the "blend-in" machine at Thomos Sweet's). Brian, is that how they did it at Steves? |
