I posted a thread about childhood memories awhile back, actually looking for a copy of "Thunderbirds Are Go" on videotape. Its for my kids, really..although I suppose I'll watch it with them (once TV turn-off week is over at their school). Well none of the video stores around had it, noone had any ideas, so I tried the Interlibrary Loan thing..and lo and behold, I now have a copy of "Thunderbirds Are Go", courtesy of the fine folks at the Maplewood Library and at the Bridgewater Library. Count me as another satisfied customer of the Interlibrary Loan set-up. Now I just hope my kids like it. |

Chris... The Thunderbirds were a Brit series with puppets that had cool rockets and other such crafts and fought bad guys globally. It used to be on in the afternoons I recall..and its replayed on some cable channels now I think. This is the movie version of the show...came out in the late 60s. |

I bought it a year ago or so when I remembered how much I liked it as a kid. It moves kind of slow, but I guess kids might still like it. More Thunderbirds sites: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~kavli/Tbirds.html and http://www.tvcentury21.com/productions/thunderbirds/tbs.html |

Don't fool yourselves that you bought it for your kids...I know I won't. Thunderbirds are GO! |

So we watched "Thunderbirds Are GO" for family movie night this weekend...it got wiggly thumbs up from the kids. One thing that struck my wife and I was that movies of all sorts are alot faster and have more packed in to them these days than older movies. This movie was made in 1966 and other movies of the period (Disney movies like "Sammy the Way Out Seal" comes to mind) are much slower when it comes to things happening and unfolding. I also think the Thunderbirds movie is an example of a half hour program that probably worked better in that format than as a movie. On the plus side, the puppetry and especially the construction of the rockets and vehicles is really really good (the special effects person for Moonraker and Superman did it from what the cover said). It is sort of goofy but also a very good send-up of the time period. The bad guy has a quasi-Russian accent...there is plenty of 1960s homage to things like James Bond and The Avengers. There is even a dream and song sequence by a puppet Cliff Richards performing in a nightclub, the song my kids are singing two days later. I am glad it is what it is and not updated. My kids enjoyed it as it is. I contrast that with some updated version of Speed Racer I saw briefly where even Pops Racer has a new hip updated hairdo and glasses...my daughter said, I dont know, I think I like the old one better. I agree...after all, a slower pace and simpler storyline and hokey lines isnt all that bad..in fact, its a nice change of pace. |

Hank, I had the same reaction about the pace of Thunderbirds Are GO. There are several very long scenes where all we do is watch a very long ship move slowly out of a hangar or pan across it in space. I always thought Thunderbird 2 was the coolest. Numbers 1 and 3 seem redundant to me, I don't get the distinction. |

I agree about Thunderbird 2...always liked the way it changed cargo compartments. Of course, when my wife said it looked like a flying turtle, my kids' impression was tainted. Thunderbird 4 was cool too but wasnt used in the movie. And yes, bookgal...this was strictly for my kids and not for me at all. |
