I noticed last week on Etrade that they seemed to have switched the names for the NASDAQ and Dow; figured it was an error because other sources didn't do this. Yesterday I heard this switcheroo on TWO radio stations; today I see CNN has switched the names. What gives? Anyone?

"what the hell I am talking about" is that different sites (i.e., more than one) referred to the index that is measured around 8,000 (aka the DJIA) as the NAS and conversely, the index around 1,200 (aka the NAS) as the DJIA.
I guess this is an editorial error only, but that is hard to fathom since it occurred in more than one place. Thus it seemed like an appropriate thing to ask if anyone else noticed. Maybe YOUR eyes only jump to the numbers, and not the labels placed on them, but I noticed more, and noticed a discrepancy in names, and an apparent switching.

My question is based on actual exposure to actual facts, so condescension isn't really necessary unless (a) you can explain the discrepancy, and (b) the explanation is so incredibly obvious that anyone and everyone ought to be familiar with it.

Must be pretty bad proofreading at those sites.

Currently the Dow is up 27 and NASDAQ is up 7. Or is it the other way around?

Given that the DJIA and the NASDAQ are completely different, and administered by different organizations, it was either a proofreading error or your are suffering from dyslexia of some sort. You may want to get a physical to make sure.

howard - they may be separately administered (which I didn't realize), but that is not really the case at the level of cnn or the ny times, where they are jointly collected and reported.
Perhaps it is dyslexia - although I made a concerted "can this be right?!" effort - I'll have to be on the lookout for other symptoms.
