BORN TO RUN: "BEST" ALBUM OF "ALL TIME"!

Remember the Zagat music survey in the works that we linked to ealier this year? Well, it looks like everybody played their part: it was announced today that Springsteen topped the poll. Born to Run ranked as the number one most popular album in their survey of the top 1,000 albums of all time. (Again we say: happy birthday, Bruce.) Springsteen had two albums in the top ten, with Darkness coming in at number seven; he and the E Street Band came in at #8 on their list of the most influential artists. This is Zagat's first Music Guide; read more at CNN.com or Billboard.com.

After Wednesday's show, I wonder if Clear Channel will stop playing Bruce's music and host CD burning rallies?

He'll only get "Dixie Chicked" by people with no sense of humor:

quote:

Last night, Bruce Springsteen called for the President to be impeached. He was kidding, of course: the suggested impeachment would make a Clarence Clemons presidency possible.

But Springsteen wasn't entirely kidding.

Went to the show at Shea last night. We were in the “nosebleeds”, five rows from the top, b/w home and third. The stage was set up in deep center field, and if you know how Shea is laid out you’ll know how far that is, so we were thankful for the big video screens. It was cold and it rained in the beginning of the show (one advantage of being that high up, we were under the overhang). THE SHOW WAS GREAT. He played for a little under 3 ½ hours, it was reminiscent of the old days. His “main” set was a little over 2 hours (I guess he doesn’t have intermissions anymore) His encores never seemed to stop. He was rockin’.

He had a couple of special guests that came out during his encore. He had Jon Landau come out on a couple of songs on the guitar (who knows if it was even turned on). He was introduced when Bruce yells “Let’s here it for management”. Fun. He brought out Gary U.S. Bonds and entourage to sing “Quarter to Three” and it felt like we could dance to a Quarter to Three. There were a couple of additional people on stage at this time that I didn’t recognize from so far away, but someone said one of them was Stephen Bishop (I don’t know though, Stephen Bishop?).

Those were all fun and they all did a rockin’ albeit somewhat unorganized rendition of Twist and Shout, again a blast from his old shows HOWEVER, he brought everyone to their feet when he brought out Bob Dylan who then sang Highway 61. What a thrill!! Dylan’s voice is shot (did he ever have one?), his guitar sounded funny (sound system issues, maybe?), but that just didn’t matter. Seeing Dylan on stage (which I never have) and seeing The Boss standing next to him in awe, giving up the stage to, obviously, one of his influences and idols was unbelievable! A great show.

There were a couple of things I couldn’t help thinking; 1) although they did as good a job as I think they could have with the sound (I saw the Stones there and, even though we had a blast seeing Mick and the boys, the sound sucked), I couldn’t help wishing I was in an inside arena, Shea was rockin’ last night, but he would have had the Meadowlands, and I mean the building, swaying, (ok, Brendan Byrne…uh…Continental Arena, whatever). And, 2) Why were all those old people in the audience?

Mr. Dickson, what did you think?

NEW YORK CITY SERENADES AND A LEGENDARY RENDEZVOUS AS BRUCE AND HIS BLOOD BROTHERS BRING IT ALL BACK HOME.

10/3: For the penultimate concert of the tour, Springsteen pulls out some big guns: a mighty "Roulette" to open, and a beautiful "New York City Serenade," with Garry on stand-up bass, to warm up a chilly night at Shea. Both were tour premieres, as were "Rendezvous" and "Another Thin Line" (an unreleased song co-written with Joe Grushecky, debuted at the end of the Reunion tour, and a strong contender for Essential disc 3). "Souls of the Departed" again included the "57 Channels"-style "mass destruction" sound-bite intro, and while Night 2 was less overtly political than Night 1, the show did include a quick guest spot from Al Franken during the band intros, as an alternate "Big Man." A wild setlist and powerful performance all around, though those hoping for songs written after 1979 might not have been as thrilled with "That '70s Show" (as one fan called it) until the encores, when a rollicking "Pink Cadillac" followed "Janey Don't You Lose Heart." Introducing "My City of Ruins," Springsteen thanked fans for their support, and called it the "best year we've ever had, really." Guests galore joined in during the second encore, including Mets pitcher (and big Bruce fan) Al Leiter on tambourine for "Rosalita"; Jon Landau and Willie Nile, both on guitar, for "Dancing in the Dark"; and a full stage with the addition of Gary U.S. Bonds for a bonus show-closing "Twist and Shout."

10/4:For "the last dance," even the elements were on our side. The all-day drizzle stopped just in time for the show, and while Bruce later knocked on the wood of his acoustic, hoping the skies would hold, we'd already stopped the rain. "Code of Silence" opened the show, another Grushecky co-write last played in Pittsburgh. "Roulette," "Johnny 99," "Tunnel," and "Another Thin Line" came back; a stunning "I Wish I Were Blind" had its E Street Band debut, a beautiful full-band electric performance that we wish had appeared before the final show... other tour premieres were "Back in Your Arms" and, opening the encores, the return of the Reunion tour staple, "Light of Day." A 30-song blowout (previously, the longest Rising show had been 27 songs) that lasted nearly 3 hours and 20 minutes, this final show was one that may have had emotions running high, but Bruce seemed committed to keeping things loose and fun. "Welcome to the Last Dance," he said before "Waitin' on a Sunny Day." "I'm getting a little misty here right about now... Steve, cheer me up!" And he was chattier than usual, leading into "Back in Your Arms" with some audience banter: "Ladies, have you ever felt taken for granted?" But Bruce saved his speechifiyin' for the biggest surprise of the night, as a fellow legend came out to share the stage for "Highway 61." Bruce told the crowd, "We have my great friend and inspiration with us tonight, Mr. Bob Dylan... we wouldn't be here tonight without him." The resulting performance was rough and ramshackle, best in theory, but it was clearly a meaningful moment for Springsteen. Introducing "Land of Hope and Dreams" a couple of songs later, he continued talking about Dylan as an artist "who was willing to stand in the fire... he made me think big thoughts... got me thinking about the world outside my little town. I don't know if great men make history or if history makes great men, but I know Bob's one of the greatest. Now and forever. I dedicate this one to him tonight, and thank him for gracing my stage... when I wrote this one I was doing my best to follow in his footsteps." And after his call for vigilance, and stressing the notion that the search for the truth is "the American Way": "And I learned that from Bob Dylan. This is 'Land of Hope and Dreams.'" After the historical summit, the show became about celebration. "Rosie, I'm home!" Willie Nile and Jon Landau returned for "Dancing," Bonds returned this time with Garland Jeffreys for the tour debut of the chestnut "Quarter to Three" along with "Twist and Shout." And that takes us to song 29. Song 30, the last song of the night? History repeats itself, with the first performance of "Blood Brothers" since Bruce and the E Streeters closed the Reunion tour with the same. All guests left the stage before this one, leaving just the E Street Band that has brought us the power, hour after hour, night after night, over the last 14 months. Springsteen seemed to be holding it together, but there were tears streaming down Clarence's face. Once again, Bruce brought bandmembers front and center to hold hands for the extra verse. It's a good night for a ride, and with that, the Rising tour rides off into the sunset. "The past four or five years have been some of the most fun and exciting of my life," Bruce told the crowd, "Thanks for sharing them with us."

FROM THE "TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT" DEPARTMENT...

Boston's WBOS 92.9 is reporting studio plans for Bruce and the Band: "A spokesperson for Bruce Springsteen has confirmed rumors that he and the E Street Band will head back into the studio after the holidays. Springsteen has reportedly written 25 songs for the project so far." That, under a header that reads, "New CD Info." As good as that sounds, don't get too excited about a new album just yet; when asked by Backstreets today to confirm the report, a Springsteen spokesperson denied having any information whatsoever about studio plans. It wouldn't be surprising at all if Bruce is indeed looking to record — Little Steven has characterized the E Street Band as in the album-tour-album cycle, and Springsteen spent time in the studio in October working on Essential, which could certainly whet his appetite. Even so, there's a big difference in the world of the Boss between entering the studio and putting out a record — as the first post-Reunion tour sessions, in the spring of 2001, recently demonstrated.

Chris,

I'm a little disappointed - I thought this new entry today was going to be your account of driving down to Bruce's house last night to trick or treat there. I've heard rumors that the Boss himself gives out the candy.

I don't know the official policy, but I would bet BYOB is ok. If I didn't have to remember song lyrics, I'd be bringing a flask of Jameson to put in my strong black coffee.

Another classic Holiday Show last night down in Asbury Park. Certainly no fun driving for FOUR HOURS to get there in the traffic, but a great night anyway.

Tonight's show is cancelled & rescheduled for Monday night. Therefore, those people who can't go on Monday will get refunds on their tickets & they are likely to become available. Good luck.

December 5 / Asbury Park, NJ / Convention Hall

Notes: Night one of the 2003 Holiday Shows, as the "Springsteen and Friends" tradition returns to the Asbury Park boardwalk after a 2002 hiatus. Emcee Danny Devito came out first with Bruce and a gospel choir to welcome the crowd. After a couple of gospel numbers, the Max Weinberg 7 took the stage once more as the house band, with guitarist Jimmy Vivino again stepping up to take lead on "Christmas Day." But this wasn't quite business as usual, with fewer Christmas songs than in years past, and more of a spotlight on the "friends." Sam Moore was a new addition this year: he and Bruce worked out a stunning quadruple-shot of duets, and Moore later returned for "My City of Ruins." Jesse Malin was also new to these shows, playing two songs from his Fine Art of Self Destruction record. As for returning guests: Little Steven brought a taste of his Underground Garage with a cover of the Ramones' Christmas classic, and stuck around for some Juke rave-ups with Southside Johnny. Garland Jeffreys, Bobby Bandiera, Nils Lofgren, Danny Federici, and two-thirds of the Redheaded Women were back-- Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell were there, but Patti Scialfa was out sick. Bruce himself was onstage most of the night, from playing some serious boogie-woogie piano on "Christmas Day," to backing his new friend Jesse Malin. As for Springsteen songs, a pair from Essential was up first: "From Small Things" with Bandiera, and a horn-drenched highlight in the live premiere of "None But the Brave." "Seaside Bar Song" and "Thundercrack" made sure that those Shore roots were well-exposed. "The Wish" was a hushed solo-piano affair, with some jingle bells in the background and Vivino adding some very light guitar. "Because the Night" was actually a Nils selection, the great great Nils Lofgren taking lead while Bruce and Steve backed him on guitar. But "Mary's Place," that was Bruce, adding the Alliance Singers and the horns for a true Asbury Park-style house party, leading into "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" with all onstage to close the main set. In the encores, Bruce introduces a song as "a prayer for our troops in Iraq and their safe return," and who would have expected what followed, but it was perfect: "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding" -- which also bodes well for the rumored impending appearance of Elvis Costello at one of the remaining shows. Emcee Devito returns to read "The Night Before Christmas" (Bruce saying afterward, "that is one long motherfucker of a story!") before "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" as usual brings everyone on stage to close the night. Songs listed below have the most prominent guest-artist listed in parentheses, but many performers were on and off stage over the course of the night.

December 7 / Asbury Park, NJ / Convention Hall
Notes: Thanks to Mother Nature, what was supposed to be closing night is now the second of three shows. Danny DeVito was not on hand but another local boy stepped up: Jon Bon Jovi. The structure of the show remained the same, a couple notable substitutions included "So Young and In Love" for "From Small Things" and "Kitty's Back" for "Mary's Place." Sam Moore was even more impressive on his second night - "My City of Ruins" went from a song he barely knew to one he owns. "My City" and "What's So Fuuny..." is one heck of a mood-switching one-two punch. Worth waiting in the cold and snow for.

December 8 / Asbury Park, NJ / Convention Hall

Notes: The longest, at three and a half hours, and arguably the hottest of the three holiday shows. As Bruce told the crowd at the beginning, "This is our Saturday Night Special even though it's Monday night." There was little variation in the set, but as practice tends to make perfect, a tight night three had MVP Sam Moore in peak form. No DeVito or JBJ, though all of the other guests returned -- and we got a little more Sam and a little more holiday spirit as the Soul Man joined in for the only "Merry Christmas Baby" of the run. We also got "96 Tears" in Garland's set and a real highlight in Southside's set, with the Bruce-penned "Talk to Me." The blazing "What's So Funny..." was again sent out to our troops in Iraq as a prayer for peace. Happy holidays and to all a good night! Songs listed below have the most prominent guest-artist listed in parentheses, but many performers were on and off stage over the course of the night.
