I just read an article in today's Star Ledger (10/29/02) about the SO Jitneys starting up. This is great news! Unfortunately, though, it sounds like they will require an annual rider's fee of $150. Is that right? While that might be reasonable for daily commuters, it pretty much renders the jitneys un-usable for those of us who would be delighted to use them periodically. Does anyone know if we will be able pay on a per-ride basis? |

You can call the parking authority and speak to them, but my understanding is that they will have a system for people who will be using the jitneys periodically (maybe a 20 ride coupon book ?). |

That's good. It doesn't make much sense to require everyone to pay an annual fee. The jitney is most attractive as an option for people who don't take the train often enough to make it worth trying to get a parking permit. |

Update with good news: I had sent an email to the head of the South Orange Parking Authority, and the first response I got from him said that for the time being they were going with the annual fee only, until the system got broken in. But I just got a second message from him, as follows: Dear Kathy: I'm happy to inform you that we are now offering a ten trip ticket book for the jitney. The booklets sell for $10.00 each. They are good for the year. Proof of residency is required. Applications are available Mon. thru Fri. 8:30 - 4:30, Village Hall, 101 South Orange Ave. Parking Authority offices are located on the second floor. Thank you. Mark C. Hartwyk
