Winona has been found guilty of vandalism & theft. This just tickles me pink. I was in retail management & I can't tell you how horrible shoplifters could be. I am so glad to see one of them go down.

Just heard on the radio, no jail time. Just service and she has to pay for the stuff she took. Now looking at all the folks in the jails, just how is that fair, and how does it make you feel? Ok, guilty, but she takes a free walk. Go figure. |

Look at it this way, if she got jail time, she probably appeals ... It goes on and on and on ...Eventually, the shift the venue to Essex County, NJ and our taxes go up. No, this is better. I thought, based on what I read, the case against her had some holes ... Missing videos. Chain of evidence ... Plus she's cute as a button! |

One of my co-workers told me that she won't be able to make films in some countries because of her convicted felon status. I personally thought she should have gone to jail for ruining "Little Women"! |

I decided that I really should watch CBS news after hearing Dan Rather tell Larry King that he wouldn't allow coverge of the Winona trial on the evening news because he wanted to live up to the slogan 'news that matters'. I was soooo happy to hear him say that. |

>>Just service and she has to pay for the stuff she took. Something doesn't make sense here. Did she get to keep the stuff she took? If not, what exactly does it mean to make someone pay for what they stole? Definitely makes it better to steal a pack of gum than a car. |

I don't think she has been sentenced yet, although the news story I read, and I am NOT proud of wasting the time by the way, indicated it is unlikely she will see the inside of a cell. I probably shouldn't say this, but I think she should get the three year maximum term for her offenses because she put the State of California through the expense of a six day trial. If she had plea bargained she would have probably gotten the same sentence that she will probably get after being convicted. |

I confess I have not paid much attention to this crime of the century but community service and restitution, if anything was damaged, is a typical sentence for shoplifting. Absent extensive priors or violence jail time is almost unheard of, at least in New York. |

I think she should go to jail for being such a terrible actress. |

I may have underestimated the seriousness with which CA views shoplifting. Two cases before the Supreme Court involve long (25 and 50 year) sentences for that crime as a third strike. http://slate.msn.com/?id=2073553 |

To make things even wierder it appears Ms. R cut the security tags off some of her "purchases" destroying the merchandise which is probably the restituition issue. In more serious cases I know that people who refuse to bargain and then are convicted end up with heavy sentences. Jean Harris of "Scarsdale Diet Doc" fame is a case in point. Maybe she can get transfered to Suffolk County and be cell mates with Lizzy G?

Okay, so what's the penalty in California for shop-lifting a Winona Ryder DVD? |

The penalty is that you have to watch it.

Of course Jean Harris committed Murder, a bit more serious than shoplifting, even from Sak's and even in California. My favorite thing (this thread inspired me to look at some of the coverage) is her claim she was preping for a role as a shoplifter. I'm just glad Anthony Hopkins didn't take the same approach to preparing for Silence of the Lambs, at least as far as we know. |
